Being Thankful

Often when we are being thankful, we tend to count our blessings, acknowledging the wonderful people, things and places that make up our reality. It is great to be grateful for the good fortune we have accumulated, but true thankfulness stems from a powerful understanding of the gift of simply being alive, and when we feel it, we feel it regardless of our circumstances. In this deep state of gratitude, we recognise the purity of the experience of being, in and of itself, and our thankfulness is part and parcel of our awareness that we are one with this great mystery that is life.

It can be difficult to access this level of consciousness as we all are very caught up in the ups and downs of our individual experiences in the world. The thing to remember about the world, though, is that it ebbs and flows, expands and contracts, gives and takes, and is by its very nature somewhat unreliable. If we only feel gratitude when it serves our desires, this is not true thankfulness. No one is exempt from the twists and turns of fate, which may, at any time, take the possessions, situations, and people we love away from us. Ironically, it is sometimes this kind of loss that awakens us to a thankfulness that goes deeper than just being grateful when things go our way. Illness and near-miss accidents can also serve as wake-up calls to the deeper realisation that we are truly lucky to be alive.

We don’t have to wait to be shaken to experience this state of being truly thankful for our lives. Tuning in to our breathing and making an effort to be fully present for a set period of time each day can do wonders for our ability to connect with true gratitude. We can also awaken ourselves with the intention to be more aware of the unconditional generosity of the life force that flows through us regardless of our circumstances.

Allow your loved ones to be human

Often when we fall in love with someone or we make a new friend, we can see that person in a glowing light. Their good qualities appear to dominate the foreground of our perception. And their negative qualities? They just don’t seem to have any. This temporary state is commonly known as putting someone on a pedestal. Often we put spiritual leaders and our gurus on pedestals. We have all done this to someone at one time or another, and as long as we remember that no one is actually “perfect,” the pedestal phase of a relationship can be enjoyed for what it is—a phase. It’s when we actually believe our own projection that troubles arise.

Everyone one of us has problems, flaws, and blind spots. When we entertain the illusion that someone is perfect, we don’t allow them room to be human, so when they make an error in judgement or act in contradiction to our idea of perfection, as the surely will, we become disillusioned. We may get angry or distance ourselves in response. In the end, they are not to blame for the fact that we idealised them. Granted, they may have enjoyed seeing themselves as perfect through our eyes, but we are the ones who chose to believe an illusion. Once we have been through this process a few times, we  learn that no one is perfect. We are all a combination of divine and human qualities and we all struggle. When we treat the people we love with this awareness, we actually allow for a much greater intimacy than when we held them aloft on this pedestal . The moment we see through our idealised projection is the moment we begin to see our loved one as he or she truly is.

We cannot truly connect with a person when we idealise them. In life, there are no pedestals—we are all walking on the same ground together. When we realise this, we can own our own humanity. This is the key to balance and wholeness within ourselves and our relationships.

The flavours of life

Growing food in our gardens is an experience many of us can enjoy. It could be a hanging basket of herbs or a cherry tomato plant in a pot on the windowsill, it can enhance our connection with the cycle of life. If there is the space outdoors, the green and blooming colours of the edible delights growing will decorate any view while tempting us to enjoy the outdoors more often. The edible plants we nurture allow us to taste the fruits of our labour while helping us more consciously participate in the circulating energy of nature.

Allow yourself to begin slowly and simply, so you can learn to dance with nature’s intricate orchestrations. If you are not sure what to grow, there are many experienced gardeners out there to help you as you choose seeds or small plants to start your growing experience.   As you learn to understand and obey the seasons, soil, sun, frost, and shade, you will become more than a mere spectator of life’s cycle. Instead, you step into the role of co-creator and enhance what you nurture. No matter how large or small the size of your garden, you can benefit from growing your own fresh and nutritious food while also revelling in the depth of flavour and texture that comes from plants that have been well-tended, nurtured, and loved. As we appreciate the food we’ve grown, we can recognise the care that farmers put into the produce most of us buy at the supermarket. With this new understanding, we can acknowledge the roles other living creatures fill as participants in cultivating the cycle of life. We may even learn to peacefully co-exist with the animals and insects that share an interest in our garden.

When we grow our food, we will participate more fully in nature’s cycles and form a closer bond with Mother Earth. Knowing how to grow your own food allows for a sense of freedom and pride that you can feed and provide for yourself, one of the most basic necessities. Gratitude may fill us as we marvel at the beauty of nature and the majesty of the universe that orchestrates such natural wonders. When we allow our appreciation of life to expand, we harvest so much more than food and the taste is that much sweeter.

An instant holiday

Since we were young most of us are led to believe that relaxation is best achieved outside of the home. As a result, we spend months anticipating weeklong holidays, rarely fully appreciating the leisure time we have on a more regular basis. It is possible, however, to recreate the same utterly relaxed state you slip into while on holiday within the walls of your own home. The feelings of serenity you enjoy during a holiday are a product of your outlook rather than where you are. You give yourself permission to enjoy yourself and unwind while on holiday. Granting yourself the same privilege while at home allows you to experience complete relaxation, even when surrounded by routine.

Our homes can be distracting places as most survival tasks are addressed there. Reviving the tranquility you felt on holiday is as easy as creating an atmosphere that helps you relax. First, get rid of the notion that messes must be cleaned up immediately and reaffirm that relaxation is as vital as physical nourishment. Then, set the mood. Music that reminds you of a much loved holiday destination can put you in a holiday mind-set. The exotic flavour of a tropical beverage or the spiciness a favourite ethnic dish can transport you to a more restful mental space. Finally, put aside your projects and commit to doing only what you consider truly pleasurable. Your responsibilities will wait as you put up your feet and revel in peacefulness that comes from within.

If you find it difficult to ignore the temptation to step back into your usual schedule, consider that relaxation must occupy a prominent place on your to-do list. You deserve to take “you time” and to care for yourself, even during life’s busy periods. While you may not always be able to physically get away from it all, you can still nurture yourself and regain your peace of mind whilst at home.

Questioning Everything

Many people feel threatened if they feel they are being asked to question their long held beliefs or their perception of reality. Yet questioning is what keeps our minds supple and strong. Simply settling on one way of seeing things and refusing to be open to other possibilities makes the mind rigid and generally creates a restrictive and uncomfortable atmosphere. We all know that person who refuses to budge on one or more issues, and we may have our own sacred cows that could use a little prodding. Being open-minded means that we are willing to question everything, including those things we take for granted.

Being willing to question everything, even things we are sure we are right about, can shake us out of complacency and reinvigorate our minds. It will open us up to understanding people and perspectives that may have been alien to us before. This alone is good reason to remain inquisitive, no matter how much experience we have or how old we get. This willingness to question has a way of generating possibilities we couldn’t have seen from the point of view of knowing something with certainty. The willingness to question everything doesn’t necessarily mean we don’t believe in anything at all, and it doesn’t mean we have to question every single thing in the world every minute of the day. It just means that we are humble enough to acknowledge how little we actually know about the mysterious universe we call home.

Nearly every revolutionary change in the history of human progress came about because someone questioned some time-honoured belief or tradition and in doing so revealed a new truth, a new way of doing things, or a new standard for ethical and moral behaviour. A commitment to staying open and inquisitive in our own individual lives can lead us to new personal revolutions and truths, truths that we will hopefully, for the sake of our growth, remain open to questioning.

Making Big Change Easier

When we have decided that it’s time for some big changes in our lives, it is sensible to ease into them by starting small. Those small changes allow us to grow into a new habit and make it a permanent part of our lives. Sudden changes may cause a sense of failure that may make it difficult to carry on, and we are more likely to give up.  Even if we think we have failed and find ourselves wondering whether to start over again, we can decide to take it more slowly this time, and move forward.

Frequently the goals we set for ourselves are indicators of the need for change and encourage us to get moving in the right direction. Be aware that it is possible that once we try out what seemed so ideal, we may find that it doesn’t actually sit right with us, or make us feel the way we had hoped. By taking things slowly, we have the chance to look around and consider other options as we learn and grow. We have time to examine the underlying values of the desire for change and find ways to manifest those feelings, whether it looks exactly like our initial goal or not. Taking small steps forward gives us time to adjust and find secure footing on our new path.

Sometimes life doesn’t give us the opportunity to anticipate or prepare for a big change, and we may find ourselves overwhelmed by what is in front of us. By choosing one thing to work on at a time, we focus our attention on something manageable, and eventually we will look up to see that we have accomplished quite a bit. Forcing change is a sign that we don’t trust our innate wisdom. So listen to your inner guidance and make changes at a pace that is right for you, ensuring that you do so in alignment with your life’s rhythms.

We all want to push the fast-forward button, but is it worth it?

We all have those times when we wish we could press a fast-forward button and propel ourselves into the future and get out of our current situation. Whether the situation we are facing is minor, or major such as the loss of a loved one, it is human nature to want to move away from pain and find comfort as soon as possible. Yet we all know deep down that we need to work through these experiences in a conscious fashion rather than bury our heads in the sand. these are the times when we access important information about ourselves and life. The learning process may not be easy, but it is full of learning that bring us knowledge we cannot find any other way.

The urge to press fast-forward can lead to escapism and denial, both of which only prolong our difficulties and can make them worse. The more direct, clear, and courageous we are in the face of whatever we are dealing with, the more quickly we will move through the situation. Understanding this, we may begin to realise that trying to find the fast-forward button is really more akin to pressing pause. When we truly grasp that the only way out of any situation in which we find ourselves is to go through it, we stop looking for ways to escape and we start paying close attention to what is happening. We realise that we are exactly where we need to be. We remember that we are in this situation in order to learn something we need to know, and we can alleviate some of our pain with the awareness that there is a purpose to our suffering.

When you feel that urge to press the fast-forward button, remember that you are not alone; we all instinctively avoid pain. But in doing so, we often prolong it and delay important learning. As you choose to move forward in real time, know that in the long run, this is the least painful way to go.

Before the world is awake

Immediately before the appearance of the pale rays of dawn, Mother Nature exists in a state of flux. Earth’s energy is stable, free of the disordered vibrations that are a by-product of humanity’s comings and goings. In these early moments of day, when the sun’s golden light is only just peeking over the horizon, our animal mind remains quite sleepy though we ourselves are awake. Deep sleep has washed away the impurities of existence that accumulated within us, so our mental, physical, and emotional potential is heightened. To meditate or just think in this peaceful yet energetically charged in-between time is to connect with the universe in an extremely intimate fashion. We discover a new kinship with the universal life force during this time because our awareness becomes a mirror for earthly consciousness—we wake as the world wakes, quietly embracing the joy of being and setting the tone for a serene, fulfilling day.

In that first glorious glow of morning, the light, air, and energy flowing around us whisper of the activity to come. While we recognise that another day of being means becoming once again immersed in the challenges of action and reaction, we also understand that we can draw upon the unique energetic qualities of daybreak for comfort, creativity, and vigour. There is serenity in the simple knowledge that we have been given the gift of another day of existence. We are inspired by sights and sounds of the sun’s gentle ascension. Birds serenade the luminosity, which grows richer by the minute. And though we may feel a residual lethargy, our vitality returns as our meditation or thinking helps us to become one with the stirring of other beings rubbing the sleep from their eyes. At the start of each day, our destiny has not yet been written, and so there is nothing we cannot do.

How we choose to meditate or think is less important than our choice to attune ourselves to the spirit of wakefulness that travels round the world each and every day. Even the briefest moment of quiet contemplation in the muted light of the sun can put all that is yet to come into perspective. As a consequence of our daybreak reflections, our lives are imbued with the same stability, tranquility, and increased awareness that humanity has long associated with the stillness of early morning.

Shake those tail feathers

Most of us express our individuality in many ways throughout our lives. Although, as we proudly share our offbeat traits and preferences with the world, we take great trouble to downplay those eccentricities we ourselves deem odd. Instead of living lives coloured by these quirky impulses, we seek out socially acceptable outlets for our peculiarities. We may not realise that we are editing ourselves in this way because our individual societal awareness is unintentionally tuned in to the attitudes of the people we encounter each day. Over time, we have learned to suppress some of the most fun aspects of individuality. To rediscover and embrace these buried traits, we need only ask ourselves what we would do if we knew for certain that no one would judge our choices.

Visualising this day without judgment can help you to understand the idiosyncrasies that are an important part of who you are but seldom manifest themselves in your existence. Perhaps you secretly dream of replacing grown-up, conservative clothing in favour of a changing array of outfits. You may envision yourself painting your car electric-green, hugging the trees in a crowded local park, singing joyous songs as you skip through your community, or taking up an exciting hobby like fire spinning. Try not to be surprised, however, if your imagination takes you in unexpectedly simple directions. In your musings, you may see yourself doing things such as breaking out in dance or dying your hair a fun colour. Regardless of the nature of your suppressed peculiarities, ask yourself what is really stopping you from making them a part of your life, and then resolve to incorporate at least one into your everyday existence.

Life as we know it is so short. Making the most of years we are granted is a matter of being ourselves even though we know that we will inevitably meet people who disapprove of our choices. When you shake your tail feathers like no one is watching, you will discover that there are many others who appreciate you because you are willing to let go of some inhibitions. By doing this you help others know it is okay. No one else in the world is precisely like you and, each time you revel in this simple fact, you rededicate yourself to the celebration of your individuality.

Go for It

There are times in your life when all the signs seem to be pointing you in a particular direction. Your thoughts and dreams are echoed in the songs we hear, the stories on tv or in the media. Maybe the message you are getting from the universe doesn’t even make sense in the “real” world, but somewhere inside, these urges feel right. Maybe you feel you are being told to move to a new town, although your life where you are seems just fine. Or maybe you feel the desire to pursue a new direction in your career, even though it never really interested you before. When you spend time getting in touch with your higher self, your intuition sends you directives to lead you to become your best and most fulfilled self. And when you are open and listening, the next step is to take action and go for it.

Once you make the decision to pursue your inner urgings, the universe sets into motion the means for all sorts of details to fall into place. A sense of peace will come over you, because you know that any questions will no longer make you wonder if your dreams are possible, but how to make them happen.  Instead of deterring you from your goal, these questions only serve to clarify your focus to move you forward. You need not throw caution to the wind to follow your dream. The positive shift in your energy affects everything around you. Like a rush of water, it goes ahead to clear debris from your path so that you can go forward. Your new attitude also attracts like minded people. Sometimes even the most unlikely people arrive to help you along your way with the information and support you need.

Wherever your dreams are pointing you today, take a step towards them. Take action and manifest your inner urges and soul whisperings.
