Purpose

Most living things are born knowing their purpose in life. For instance, an animal will spend its day foraging for food, taking care of itself and its young, and creating a home. No one tells an animal to do this, yet it instinctively knows how. Humans, however, usually are not born consciously knowing what their purpose is.

Purpose gives our life meaning. When you discover your purpose, you will live your life with intention and make the choices that serve your objective for why you are here on the planet. Finding your purpose is not always easy. Some people may never find their purpose. You must embrace life wholeheartedly, explore many different pathways, and allow yourself to grow. Your purpose is as unique as you are and will evolve as you move through life. You don’t need anyone’s permission to fulfil your purpose, and no one can tell you what that purpose is. Finding and fulfilling your purpose can be a lifelong endeavour. To figure out what your purpose is, ask yourself what drives you,  not what forces you out of bed in the morning, but what makes you happy to be alive. Make a list of activities that you wish you were involved in or think about a career path that you would love to embark upon. These are the endeavours that can help you fulfil your purpose and bring you the most satisfaction.

Imagine yourself working on projects that don’t interest you or fulfil your purpose, yet they help satisfy your basic survival needs. Imagine how living this way each day would make you feel. Next, imagine yourself devoting your time to projects that spark your imagination, inspire, excite, and satisfy you. More often than not, these activities are some of the ways that you can fulfil your life purpose. Time spent on these endeavours will never feel like a waste. Live your life with purpose, and you will feel significant and capable because every action you take and each choice you make will have meaning to it.

Creating a sanctuary in your garden

We all have an innate need to celebrate life. At a most basic level, we honour the forces that came together to bring us into being by caring for our bodies and our souls. To truly enjoy our existence, we must also learn to cultivate loveliness in those special places that replenish the soul. When we create a sanctuary in our garden, we are reminded that we are a part of both nature’s essence and something more. An outdoor retreat is a place where we can surround ourselves in nature, beauty and the life force. It is not difficult to create a sanctuary we should endeavour, however, to create sanctuaries that speak to us as individuals.

Whether we have a balcony, a grassy corner, a patio, or a porch at our disposal, our creative potential is infinite. Any of these spaces can become a magnificent garden. If we are drawn to specific themes such as Zen, angels, paradise, or the ethereal, we should explore them. Décor and furniture crafted from natural materials like wood and stone blend seamlessly into nature. Although we can also augment the natural world by decorating our garden sanctuaries with statues, bells or gongs, or colourful flags. Running water, like that in a created stream or fountain, helps energy flow smoothly. If space is a concern, crystals and mirrors can fulfil the same function. Hidden features like concealed swings and reflecting pools veiled in shadow can surprise and delight. As your garden sanctuary evolves, remember to invite the elemental spirits of nature to assist you in your efforts to create a small pocket of harmony, beauty, and peace in your own garden. If you have not already felt their presence, sit quietly in your garden and reach out to them. You will feel these earthly guides at your side as you continue to develop your sanctuary.

In the sanctuary of brilliant colour, sweet scents, and stillness you create in your garden, the burdens imposed upon you by a sometimes hectic world will melt away. The splendour and tranquility of what you have brought into being will entrance you, allowing you to forget the constraints of time and space. No matter how large or small your garden sanctuary, the time you spend revelling in its pleasures will refresh your spirit and provide you with innumerable opportunities to celebrate life.

Being Thankful

Often when we are being thankful, we tend to count our blessings, acknowledging the wonderful people, things and places that make up our reality. It is great to be grateful for the good fortune we have accumulated, but true thankfulness stems from a powerful understanding of the gift of simply being alive, and when we feel it, we feel it regardless of our circumstances. In this deep state of gratitude, we recognise the purity of the experience of being, in and of itself, and our thankfulness is part and parcel of our awareness that we are one with this great mystery that is life.

It can be difficult to access this level of consciousness as we all are very caught up in the ups and downs of our individual experiences in the world. The thing to remember about the world, though, is that it ebbs and flows, expands and contracts, gives and takes, and is by its very nature somewhat unreliable. If we only feel gratitude when it serves our desires, this is not true thankfulness. No one is exempt from the twists and turns of fate, which may, at any time, take the possessions, situations, and people we love away from us. Ironically, it is sometimes this kind of loss that awakens us to a thankfulness that goes deeper than just being grateful when things go our way. Illness and near-miss accidents can also serve as wake-up calls to the deeper realisation that we are truly lucky to be alive.

We don’t have to wait to be shaken to experience this state of being truly thankful for our lives. Tuning in to our breathing and making an effort to be fully present for a set period of time each day can do wonders for our ability to connect with true gratitude. We can also awaken ourselves with the intention to be more aware of the unconditional generosity of the life force that flows through us regardless of our circumstances.

Allow your loved ones to be human

Often when we fall in love with someone or we make a new friend, we can see that person in a glowing light. Their good qualities appear to dominate the foreground of our perception. And their negative qualities? They just don’t seem to have any. This temporary state is commonly known as putting someone on a pedestal. Often we put spiritual leaders and our gurus on pedestals. We have all done this to someone at one time or another, and as long as we remember that no one is actually “perfect,” the pedestal phase of a relationship can be enjoyed for what it is—a phase. It’s when we actually believe our own projection that troubles arise.

Everyone one of us has problems, flaws, and blind spots. When we entertain the illusion that someone is perfect, we don’t allow them room to be human, so when they make an error in judgement or act in contradiction to our idea of perfection, as the surely will, we become disillusioned. We may get angry or distance ourselves in response. In the end, they are not to blame for the fact that we idealised them. Granted, they may have enjoyed seeing themselves as perfect through our eyes, but we are the ones who chose to believe an illusion. Once we have been through this process a few times, we  learn that no one is perfect. We are all a combination of divine and human qualities and we all struggle. When we treat the people we love with this awareness, we actually allow for a much greater intimacy than when we held them aloft on this pedestal . The moment we see through our idealised projection is the moment we begin to see our loved one as he or she truly is.

We cannot truly connect with a person when we idealise them. In life, there are no pedestals—we are all walking on the same ground together. When we realise this, we can own our own humanity. This is the key to balance and wholeness within ourselves and our relationships.

The flavours of life

Growing food in our gardens is an experience many of us can enjoy. It could be a hanging basket of herbs or a cherry tomato plant in a pot on the windowsill, it can enhance our connection with the cycle of life. If there is the space outdoors, the green and blooming colours of the edible delights growing will decorate any view while tempting us to enjoy the outdoors more often. The edible plants we nurture allow us to taste the fruits of our labour while helping us more consciously participate in the circulating energy of nature.

Allow yourself to begin slowly and simply, so you can learn to dance with nature’s intricate orchestrations. If you are not sure what to grow, there are many experienced gardeners out there to help you as you choose seeds or small plants to start your growing experience.   As you learn to understand and obey the seasons, soil, sun, frost, and shade, you will become more than a mere spectator of life’s cycle. Instead, you step into the role of co-creator and enhance what you nurture. No matter how large or small the size of your garden, you can benefit from growing your own fresh and nutritious food while also revelling in the depth of flavour and texture that comes from plants that have been well-tended, nurtured, and loved. As we appreciate the food we’ve grown, we can recognise the care that farmers put into the produce most of us buy at the supermarket. With this new understanding, we can acknowledge the roles other living creatures fill as participants in cultivating the cycle of life. We may even learn to peacefully co-exist with the animals and insects that share an interest in our garden.

When we grow our food, we will participate more fully in nature’s cycles and form a closer bond with Mother Earth. Knowing how to grow your own food allows for a sense of freedom and pride that you can feed and provide for yourself, one of the most basic necessities. Gratitude may fill us as we marvel at the beauty of nature and the majesty of the universe that orchestrates such natural wonders. When we allow our appreciation of life to expand, we harvest so much more than food and the taste is that much sweeter.

Tending to our daily chores

In the very recent past, the term women’s work has come to have a derogatory connotation. Women’s work is said to encompass all the domestic chores that have historically been associated only with women such as cooking, cleaning and staying at home with the children. Whenever a person is limited to only certain kinds of work in a society, there is a need to break free from that work in order to inhabit a place of choice. However, when we choose to do alleged women’s work because we enjoy it, there is nothing degrading about it. There is an honour to it, and when done alone or in a group this work can be truly meaningful and fulfilling because the home is the foundation of security for all who live in it. The importance of tending the hearth that nurtures all who bask in its warmth cannot be overstated.

In addition to being essential to the functioning of the world, alleged women’s chores offer creative fulfilment, intimate interaction, and personal satisfaction. The more we become aware of the significance of this realm of labour, the more fulfilling it will be to those who do the work and those who benefit from it. A well-set table and a delicious, healthy meal can uplift and heal us on multiple levels. Clean, crisp sheets on a bed allow us to enter a deep slumber, inspiring a sense of safety and trust. Our mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health all rest upon the smooth functioning of our homes.

The gift of women’s work, which still often comes from the hands of women, now also comes from fathers, husbands, and hired help. Whatever the source, our sincere gratitude upon receiving these treasures reminds us of the profound value of what is traditionally known as women’s work. The more we acknowledge the tremendous importance of this work, the more we are able to do it with a sense of pride, never feeling for a moment that our efforts are less significant or meaningful than those working outside the home—on the contrary, it is this work that makes all other work possible.

Five Things to start rebuilding your self-esteem

Our primary relationship in life is with ourselves. No one else goes through our  experiences in life in the same way. We are our own constant companion, and often our worst critic. To remind ourselves of our abilities, we can do the five things I like about myself exercise.

Begin by writing down at least five things that you like about yourself. Don’t be modest.  If you are having trouble coming up with a total of five items, you know that this exercise can really benefit you.  Make sure you include more than your physical attributes on your list, since our bodies are only part of who we are. If you are still struggling with what to include on your list, think of what you like about your favourite people, because these traits are probably qualities that you possess too. Another way to complete your list is to think of five things you don’t like about yourself and find something about these traits that you can like.

Carry on this exercise for a week, thinking of five new things you like about yourself every day. At the end of the week, read the list aloud to yourself while standing in front of a mirror. Instead of looking for flaws to fix, allow the mirror to reflect your attributes. You may feel silly about standing in front of a mirror and reading aloud a list of your admirable attributes, but it might just bring a smile to your face and change the way you see yourself. Remember, it is when you feel the most resistant that this exercise can benefit you the most. Because we are constantly looking at the world, instead of looking at ourselves, we don’t often see what’s magnificent about ourselves that others do. When we take the time to experience ourselves the way we would experience someone we love and admire, we become our best companion and supporter on life’s journey.
