Embracing New Information

We are living in an information age. It is very easy to become overwhelmed by the constant influx of scientific studies, breaking news and even spiritual revelations that fill our bookshelves, radio waves, Internet pages, tv screens and in-boxes. No sooner have we made a decision on what to eat or how to think about the universe than a new report, video or book comes out confounding our well-researched opinion. After a while, we may very well be tempted to dismiss or ignore new information in the interest of stabilising our point of view or preventing overloading our brains, and this is understandable.

Rather than shutting down and ignoring what might be vital information, we might try instead to remain open by allowing our intuition to guide us. For example, there is a plethora of contradictory studies concerning foods that are allegedly good for you and foods that are allegedly bad for you. At a certain point, though, we can feel for ourselves whether coffee or tomatoes are good for us or not. The answer is, of course, different for each individual, and this is something that a scientific study can’t account for. All we can do is take in the information and process it through our own systems of understanding.

Only we can decide what information, ideas and concepts we will integrate. Remaining open give us the option to change and shift by checking in with ourselves as we learn new information. It keeps us flexible and alert, and while it can feel a bit like being thrown off balance all the time, this openness is essential to the process of growth and expansion. Maybe the key is realising that we are not going to finally get to some stable place of having it all worked out. After all, we are always learning. Throughout our lives we will go through the processes of opening to new information, integrating it and stabilising our worldview. As soon as we have reached some kind of stability, it will be time to open again to new information, which is inherently destabilising. Maybe, if we see ourselves as surfers riding the incoming waves of information and inspiration, always open and willing to attune ourselves to the next shift, we will see how lucky we are to have this opportunity to play on the waves and, most of all, to enjoy the ride whilst we are learning.

Ageing gracefully

It seems generally we tend to associate youth with beauty, but in fact beauty transcends every age. Just as a deciduous tree is stunning in all its stages, from its full leafy green in the summer to its naked skeleton during winter, and everything in between, human beings are beautiful throughout their life spans. As we cultivate our life, our beauty becomes as much about what we are creating and doing as it is about our appearance.

Photo by Mehmet Turgut Kirkgoz on Pexels.com

We are learning from the early years of our lives and experiencing as much as we possibly can. We move through the world absorbing like sponges the ideas of other people and the world. Like a tree in spring, we are waking up to the world. In this phase of life, our physical strength, youth and beauty help open doors and attract attention. Gradually, we begin to use the information we have gathered to form ideas and opinions of our own. As we cultivate our philosophy about life, our beauty becomes as much about what we are saying, doing and creating as it is about our appearance. Like a tree in summer, we become full, expressive, beautiful and productive.

When the time comes for us to let go of the creations of our middle lives, we are like a tree in autumn dropping leaves, releasing our past attachments and preparing for a new phase of growth. The children move on, and careers shift or end. The lines on our faces, the stretch marks and the grey hairs are beautiful testaments to the fullness of our experience. In the winter of our lives, we become stripped down to our essence like a tree. We may become more radiant than ever at this stage because our inner light shines brighter through our eyes as time passes. Beauty at this age comes from within, from the very core of our being, our essence. This essence is a reminder that there is nothing to fear in growing older and there is a kind of beauty that comes only after one has spent many years on this earth.

Respond or react

I am sure we have all had those moments when a conversation suddenly shifts and becomes hard. It maybe that someone’s words sting or a tone has changed, and you feel it in your body. Your chest tightens, your heart races, and it may feel like you can’t quite find your voice. Sometimes we lash out, other times we retreat into silence. After the encounter is over, and we have given it some thought, we wish we had been able to stay steady and speak from a place of kindness and clarity instead of fear. It’s such a tender human experience, and it happens to us all.

The truth is there’s always a small space,  a pause, between what happens and how we choose to respond. Remember that in that pause lives our freedom. If we can take even one gentle breath before we speak, we give ourselves the chance to soften, to notice what’s really happening inside, and to choose words that build bridges instead of walls. That little moment of presence can open the door to greater honesty, understanding, and connection.

And here is something beautiful, with practice, we can get better at this. Little by little, we can learn to bring more calm, courage, and compassion into all our conversations. Even the most difficult moments can become opportunities to grow closer, heal, and share more of who we truly are. Every word becomes a chance to bring more love into the world, and that’s a gift we can give, again and again.

Stress – what is it?

Have you set yourself goals that you want to achieve?  If so, are they actually achievable?  And more importantly are they really necessary? There is stress around goals.  You make them mean something about your worth and value and this creates pressure as you strive to achieve them.  And if you do achieve them, will there still be something missing? So, let’s imagine you want to test out how stressed you are.

If you feel you have to make it happen you are putting a huge responsibility on your shoulders.  You think you are on your own.  You work hard at gaining more knowledge, you work harder and keep a very tight control.  You make it all about your personal commitment and discipline.  You want to prove yourself to yourself and to everyone else or you think you will lose everything.  We force ourselves out of our comfort zones feeling stress and fear all the way along.

Photo by Nicola Barts on Pexels.com

Or you could leave it all up to the Universe.  This means we sit and wait for the conditions of our environment or in our mind to be perfect.  This is very unlikely to happen.  So we get stressed whilst we wait. Or you can use your free will and make decisions from your innate wisdom and stay on course when your thoughts are stressful.  It is your thoughts that cause the stress, since stress itself does not exist until we create it.

So relax into what it is you want to achieve, live in the moment, don’t think about the future as it hasn’t happened yet, do what you feel is right and your stress levels will reduce and you may even find that you have no need to set goals at all.

If this has resonated with you get in touch today. Through personalised guidance, I will help you to learn to change your thoughts, help you learn that you are special and change the way you are thinking about what you think about yourself.

New start

There are times in our lives that lend themselves to starting something new. They could be the beginning of the year, leaving school, leaving a job, or moving house. These all are times that turn our minds to fresh starts. Their advantage is that they bring with them the energy of that event, creating a tide of change around them that we can ride on . But we can choose to start anew at any time. At any moment, we can decide that a bad day or a relationship that got  off on the wrong foot needs a relaunch. It is a mental shift that allows us to clean the slate and approach anything with fresh eyes. We can make that choice at any time.

Photo by Ketut Subiyanto on Pexels.com

Starting new is most powerful when we focus our attention on what we are choosing to create. Giving all of our attention to the unwanted aspects of our lives allows what we resist to persist. We need to remember to leave enough room in the process of new beginnings to be kind to ourselves. It takes time to become accustomed to anything new, no matter how much we like it. There is no need to get down on ourselves if we don’t reach our new goals instantly. Instead, we should acknowledge the forward motion, knowing that with each choice we learn, grow, and move in a positive direction.

Making the choice to start anew has its own energy. The forward momentum creates a sort of vacuum behind it, pulling all you need toward you to help you continue moving in your chosen direction. Once the journey has begun, it may take unexpected turns, but it never really ends. Like cycles in nature, there are periods of obvious growth and periods of dormancy that signal a time of waiting for the right moment to burst forth. Each time we choose to start anew we dedicate ourselves to becoming the best we are able to be.

How to survive Valentine’s Day as a single person

Take advantage of you and really look after yourself on this day. Turn the focus of your attention to you. Buy yourself something special, something you will really love and appreciate. It maybe something that you wouldn’t usually think of buying for yourself, but on this occasion it feels right to do it. Here are some more suggestions for you to feel special on this loving day:

  • treat yourself to a day being pampered at the spa. Or
  • treat yourself to a special meal and enjoy it in the comfort of your own home. It can be a take away delivered to your door.  Use your favourite crockery, buy a bottle of wine and enjoy your chosen feast. Or
  • watch your favourite film or read a good book. Or
  • How about you and some of your best friends getting together to watch a few of the worst romantic comedy films you can find.  Have a fun evening with people you love to be with and who love to be with you.
  • Make a Valentine’s Day resolution to love yourself.  Resolve to take some evening classes or to go on that trip you have been promising yourself.  Resolve to try new restaurants or to try new recipes.  Make a resolution that you will make a start towards the dreams you know you want to achieve.
  • If you have children why not make the day special for them as well as you.  Buy some little gifts – chocolates, stuffed toys, model cars etc. – and make a present hunt game with clues, and they can fun trying to find the gifts and you will have fun watching them.

Whatever it is you choose to do, whether it is on your own, with friends or with your children, make sure it is fun for you.

Do not:

  • Find a stranger to spend the night with.  You will regret it in the morning and make it worse for yourself when the next Valentine’s Day comes around.
  • Watch tv programmes filled with loves stories.
  • Get all dressed up at work as your colleagues will jump to conclusions and make your life a misery all day.
  • Sit at home being miserable and feeling sorry for yourself because you don’t have someone to share this sill day with.
  • Beat yourself up for feeling miserable and lonely.

A great thing to do would be to wait until February 15th and then treat yourself to a heart-shaped box of chocolates at half price, or buy some flowers for yourself for half price.

Remember, it is just one day.  It will all be over in the morning.

Plan your life around yourself and learn to really love yourself again.  This will not only be fun and interesting, but loving yourself is the basis of beginning your new life as the new, confident you.

Uplifting Showers

Water falling from the sky has been interpreted in many different ways by numerous cultures. In various areas of the world, rain was viewed as a nourishing gift, given by well-pleased deities. Rain has also been viewed as a symbol of emotional cleansing and representing the unending union between earth and sky. Today, rain is often seen as an annoyance, something to be borne doggedly while attending to one’s usual duties. But the arrival of one or more rainy days can also be interpreted as a signal to slow down and contemplate life. When Mother Nature darkens the sky and causes drizzle to fall, freshly opened buds close and many animals settle into their nests for a snooze. We can honour rainy days by following the example put forth by the flora and fauna around us. Even if we must venture out into a shower, we can still slow down and appreciate our connection to nature.

A rainy day spent indoors can be wonderfully uplifting. As the rain pours down, fill your home with light, sound, and comfort so that you can fully appreciate the loveliness of being snug and dry during a downpour. Storms literally change the energy in the air, and you may feel driven to follow suit by lighting candles or singing. You may even feel compelled to talk to each room in your home in order to express your gratitude for the protection they give you. If, however, you feel claustrophobic rather than calm because you cannot venture outdoors, you can clear away negative energy by getting rid of clutter, sweeping away dust, and freshening your up spaces. The happier you are in your home, the more beautiful and wondrous a simple rain shower will seem.

A sheltered spot like a covered porch, sunroom, or bay window can provide you with a wonderful vantage point from which to watch the raindrops as they make their descent to earth. And the pitter-patter of rain on a rooftop or car window can even be a therapeutic and soothing sound, one that reminds us that while the unforeseen will always be a part of our lives, we should never forget that nearly every cloud that comes into our lives will have a silver lining.

Are You Holding on to Things You ‘Should’ Do?

A lot of people carry around with them a large amount of “baggage” or “clutter” in their minds. When I say this I mean that they are still holding onto things that they say they ‘should’ do, but they really don’t need to. The ‘coulds’ and ‘shoulds’ in your life that hold you back – you want to let go, but you don’t. An example is worrying about whether they should have bought that handbag they liked even though they couldn’t afford it. Worrying about it and continuing to carry around that clutter doesn’t do anyone any good. This is very common with people going through or in the aftermath of divorce. You are not alone, I have done it myself.

Photo by DS stories on Pexels.com

Are you carrying around with you a lot of emotional attention that you really could be doing without instead of focusing on something more productive? Are you like this? If you are, I bet it has a negative influence on your confidence and self esteem. Take a look at your life and get rid of this baggage by asking yourself some questions and by completing the following exercise. In effect, what you are doing is making certain tasks “complete”, drawing a line under them and moving on. Another term for this is “psychological completion” or just “completion”.

The following questions can be taken at one sitting or over a number of hours/days. By writing the answers down they become more formal. Get to it and watch your confidence soar!

• Make a list of 10 things that you are putting up with at home

• Make a list of 10 things that you are putting up with at work

• Make a list of 10 things that you are putting up with in any other areas of your life

Are you surprised at what you are putting up with in your life?

Make an action plan of how to reduce this number! Take action!

• Do you need to clear the air with anyone? If so, just do it! Life is too short!

• Did you ever say that you were going to call someone or keep in touch with someone yet have done nothing about it? If yes, call them or send an email to them today.

Let go of as many coulds, woulds, shoulds, maybes, oughts as you can. Take action!

By completing these exercises you will be able to focus more on the here, the now and the future. You will now be able to let go of some of the things that have been taking up your valuable attention units – those things that knock your self esteem.

Do you want to remain stuck and miserable? If your answer is no, take action.

If this has resonated with you get in touch today. Through personalised guidance, I will help you to learn to rebuild your self confidence and change the way you are thinking about what you think about yourself.

Gaslighting is very subtle

Gaslighting can feel so subtle in the beginning. A passing comment that makes you doubt yourself. A quiet dismissal of your feelings. A disagreement where you walk away wondering if you really did remember incorrectly. That’s the tricky thing about gaslighting it often starts small, almost invisible, until one day you realise you’re questioning your own reality. For many, gaslighting is a trait of a narcissistic relationship, a way of another person keeping you off balance and unsure of yourself.

If you’ve experienced this, understand that it’s not your fault and you’re not imagining things. Gaslighting is intended to confuse you, but the fact that you’re noticing it now is a sign of your strength. When you can name these patterns for what they are, you can begin to reclaim your confidence, rebuild your sense of self, and take meaningful steps toward healthier relationships.

Healing from the effects of gaslighting and narcissistic behaviour is possible u and it’s a deeply empowering journey. You deserve to feel grounded in your own truth again, to set boundaries that honour you, and to trust your inner knowing. There’s a brighter, more peaceful chapter ahead of you, and every small step you take brings you closer to the love and respect you know you have always deserved.

If this has resonated with you get in touch today. Through personalised guidance, I will help you to learn to rebuild your self confidence and change the way you are thinking about what you think about yourself.
