Your life is filled with relationships and events which help shape who you are and affect what you believe to be true about your life and the world in general.  Everyone has their own life story. Depending on your perspective and your willingness or not to grow, your experiences can become fodder for negativity and possible patterns for playing the victim.  Alternatively they can fuel your life with empowerment and continued self-development.  It is the story you tell yourself about what happens that makes all the difference.

Take a moment to look at the life story you are creating for yourself on an ongoing basis. If you are feeling peaceful about the past and trust in your ability to handle whatever comes your way, then you are framing circumstances in a manner that serves you well. On the other hand, if you retain a lot of guilt or resentment and often feel weighed down by life, you may want to change your perspective of the versions of past and present events. No matter who the characters are in your story or what they have done, you are the only one who can give their actions the meaning they will have for you. You are the only one who can define what role you will play in your own life. By taking responsibility for your story, you are able to learn and grow, forgive and find compassion, and most importantly, move on into a brighter future.

From now on, choose a life story that supports you. Let it be proof of your own resilience and creativity. Be kind with the roles you give yourself and generous with how many chances you get to learn what you need to know. When you remember that you are the author of your own story, you are free to create a masterpiece.

Links that Last

It is a modern occurrence in our lifestyles that often isolates us from one another, it can be difficult to forge meaningful connections. Self-protection and mistrust prevent us from reaching out to neighbours and peers, and we consequently feel like we don’t truly belong anywhere. Yet creating community can be as simple as reaching out within our own neighbourhoods. We can find there are walls of suspicion and doubt which can divide us. But when we create a community we find we are willing to rise above those walls and those doubts and help us befriend the individuals who inhabit our neighbourhood or road. We are taught from childhood to fear those we do not know, but community is as much a part of survival as safety. When we take a proactive approach, we can harmoniously unite our neighbours and build a network of support that contributes to the well-being of all involved.

Your actions in the community needn’t be complicated. If you are new to your area, sending letters of introduction to your closest neighbours can ensure that their curiosity about you is partly satisfied. Consider telling them a bit about yourself and how you plan to positively contribute to your locale, even if it is something as straightforward as planting attractive flowers in your window boxes. Or if others have recently moved in nearby, schedule some time to welcome them to the area. By doing so, you can calm any misgivings they have while demonstrating that your neighbourhood is a nice place to live. It is much easier to meet people while outdoors, so try to take frequent strolls or sit outside. Say hello to people who pass by, and you will likely get to know your neighbours speedily. And one of the easiest ways to build a sense of community is to help organise local projects and events that bring people together in service or in fun!

Even if you have little in common with your neighbours, your proximity to one another can offer a wonderful opportunity to pursue new friendships and working relationships. You may not see eye to eye on everything, but each of you understands that community helps people feel connected. As you grow to know and then to like one another, the city or town where you reside will truly become your home.

Clearing Your Mind

During a day we are bombarded with words, images, stories, songs and a whole host of stimuli from any number of sources and they continue to play in our heads for hours. Especially as we lie in bed, in the quiet dark, our minds continue noisily processing all the input from our day. This can leave us feeling unsettled and harassed. It also makes it difficult to take in any new information or inspiration. Like a cluttered house that needs to be cleared if it is to have room for movement and new life, our minds need clearing if they are to be open to new information, ideas, and inspiration.

Frequently, the activities we choose to help us relax only add to the clutter. Watching television, seeing a film, reading a book, or talking to a friend all involve taking in more information. In order to really clear our minds, we need a break from mental stimulation. Activities like yoga, dancing, or taking a long walk help to draw our attention to our bodies, slowing our mental activity enough that our minds begin to settle. Deep breathing is an even simpler way to draw attention away from our mental activities. Once we are mentally relaxed, we can begin the process of clearing our minds. Most of us instinctively know what allows our minds to relax and release any unnecessary clutter. It may be meditation or time spent staring at the stars. Whatever it is, these exercises feel like a cool, cleansing bath for the brain and leave our minds feeling clear and open.

Setting aside time to clear our minds once a day creates a habit that becomes second nature over time. Our minds will begin to settle with less effort the more we practice. Ultimately, the practice of clearing our minds allows us to be increasingly more open so that we can perceive the world as the fresh offering it is, free of yesterday’s mental clutter.

Being aware of your thoughts

When you are in the company of people whose attitudes are persistently negative you generally don’t have a good time.  But we still seem to tolerate the critical and negative chatter that originates within our own minds. Often we are so used to the constant stream of self-limiting, critical consciousness that pops up in our thoughts, that we are unaware of the impact these musings have on our lives. It is only when we become aware of the power of such thoughts that we can remove many of them and fill the emptiness they leave with loving, peaceful affirmations. Many people, upon paying careful attention to their thinking patterns, are surprised at the negativity they find there. But when we take notice of our thoughts in a non-judgemental way, we initiate a healing process that will eventually allow us to replace intimidating and upsetting self-talk with positive, empowering thoughts.

Usually the occasional downbeat or judgemental thought may have little impact on your happiness, but the ongoing negativity that passes unnoticed can have a dampening effect on your mood and your outlook. When you are aware of the tone of your thoughts, however, you can challenge them. Try to become conscious of your feelings, opinions, and judgements for one day. From sunup to sundown, scrutinise the messages you are feeding into your subconscious mind. Consider your thoughts from the perspective of a detached observer and try not to judge yourself based on the thoughts that come unbidden into your mind. Simply watch the flow of your consciousness and make a note of the number of times you find yourself focusing on gloomy thoughts or indulging in self-directed criticism.

When you become increasingly aware of your patterns of thought, whether positive or negative, you will gradually learn to control the character of your stream of consciousness. Try to remember that the images and ideas that pass through your mind are transient and not a true representation of who you are. In training yourself to be cognizant of your thoughts, you gain the ability to actively modulate your mood. The awareness you cultivate within yourself will eventually enable you to create a foundation of positivity from which you can build a more authentic existence.

Humanity

Sometimes we only see differences when it comes to our families. We see the way our parents maybe cling to ideas we don’t believe, or act in ways we try not to copy. We see how practical or skilled one of our siblings is and wonder how we can be from the same gene pool. Similarly, we see how different we are from each other within the human family, in many ways ranging from gender and race to geographical location and religious beliefs. It is almost as if we think we are a different species sometimes. But the truth is, in our personal families as well as the human family, we really are the same.

A single mother of four living in Africa looks up at the same stars and moon that shine down on an elderly Frenchman in Paris. A Tibetan monk living in India, a new born infant in China, and a young couple saying their marriage vows in Indiana all breathe the same air, and by the same process. We have probably all been hurt and we have all cried. Each one of us knows how it feels to love someone dearly. No matter what our political views are, we all love to laugh. Regardless of how much or how little money we have, our hearts pump blood through our bodies in the same way. With all this in common, it is clear we are each individual members of the same family. We are human.

Acknowledging how close we all are, Instead of clinging to what separates us, enables us to feel less alone in the world. Every person we meet, see, hear, or read about is a member of our family. We truly are not alone. We can also begin to see that we are perfectly capable of understanding and relating to people who, on the surface, may seem very different from us. This awareness prevents us from disconnecting from people on the other side of the tracks, and the other side of the world. We begin to understand that we must treat all people for what they are – family.

Simulate a brand-new day

It is tempting to focus on tomorrow as a blank slate with all the possibilities that newness provides when today is not going well. Yes tomorrow will be a brand-new day, but we don’t have to wait until tomorrow to start fresh. We can start fresh at any moment, clearing our energy field of any negativity that has accumulated, and call this very moment the beginning of our brand-new day.

We all know there is something about the sunrise and those first few hours of the morning that make us feel cleansed and rejuvenated, ready to move forward enthusiastically. As the day wears on, we often lose some of this dynamic energy and the inspiration it provides. This may be why we look forward to tomorrow as providing the possibility of renewal. Many traditions consider the light of the rising sun to be particularly divine in its origins; this is why so many people in the world face east when performing their rituals. We can also cultivate that rising sun energy inside ourselves, carrying it with us to light our way through any time of day or night, drawing on its power to awaken and renew our spirits.

One simple way to do this is to carry an image or a photograph of the rising sun with us in our wallet or purse. We can also pin this image on our wall at work or at home, or have it as our screensaver on our computer. When we feel the need to start fresh, we can take a moment to gaze at the image, allowing its light to enter into our hearts. As we do this, we might say out loud or quietly to ourselves, ‘I am ready to let go of the past and start anew’. We can visualise anything we want to release leaving us as we exhale, and as we inhale, we can take in the fresh energy of the eastern sun, allowing it to light the way to a brand-new day.

Saying farewell to a home

We can often forget to say farewell to the home we are leaving behind when we move from one residence to another, as we can get so caught up in the forward thrust of where we are going. Yet saying goodbye is an important part of moving forward. It can give us a sense of completion so that we are able to fully inhabit our new space, as we have left nothing of ourselves in the old one. In this way, we honour the space that has held and nurtured us.  At the same time, we empty it of our energy so that the new residents can make the space theirs.

Take some time to be alone, plan a walk through your home that begins and ends at the front door. Prepare yourself mentally to be as present as you can during this process. Listen to your authentic inner voice. As you enter the house, you might say, “I have come to thank you for being my home and to say goodbye.” You might touch the walls with your hands as you move through the house, some people burn sage as an offering, as well as an energy cleanser. Spend some time in each room expressing your gratitude and gathering or releasing any lingering energy from the room. As you do this, you are freeing your home to embrace its new occupants. Remember to visit your outside spaces as well. Plants are especially sensitive to the energy around them and will appreciate your consideration.

Know that you have completed your final journey through your home as you make your way back to the front door, and that you have honoured it with this ritual of farewell. As you close and lock the door behind you, say one last goodbye. Now you can walk freely into your future and fully inhabit the new spaces that will keep you safe and warm.

Criticism

We all make mistakes from time to time, it is human nature.  As we go through life we can take the opportunity to learn from any mistakes and improve ourselves.  Being criticised for making a mistake or for someone’s perception of your actions is ok if it is constructive.  The other type of criticism is destructive and is usually done by somebody attacking your character.

Bear in mind that criticism aimed at you may not make any sense at the time. Generally speaking there is usually a bit of truth in criticism, even when it appears to be given out of spite and/or bitterness.  It may be the case that a slight on your character is a reflection of how another person sees you at that point in time.  Take a step back and try to see things from their point of view. Maybe ask a trusted friend or relative for their honest opinion.  Use criticism wisely and as a learning experience, whether it is constructive or destructive.

Also remember that people who criticise a lot and make remarks to be hurtful are the ones that need the help, not you.  Criticism is an easy form of ego defence.  Critical people tend to be easily insulted and especially in need of ego defence.  Some people use criticism as a form of bullying to make you feel inferior and boost their opinion of themselves.

Anybody can criticise, condemn and complain, but it takes character and self-control to be understanding of people’s motives and to be forgiving of their actions.

Belly Laughs

When we were children we laughed hundreds of times each day, delighted by the newness of living. When we grew up we tended to not allow ourselves to let go in a good belly laugh for whatever reason.  We can get laughter back into our lives simply by making the conscious decision to laugh. Though most of us are incited to laugh only when exposed to humour or the unexpected, each of us is actually capable of laughing at will. A laugh that comes from the belly carries with it the same positive effects whether prompted by a funny joke or consciously willed into existence. When our laughter comes from the core of our being, it permeates every cell in our physical selves, beginning in the centre and radiating outward, a bit like the ripples on a pond, until we are not merely belly laughing but rather body laughing.

Laughter has been a part of the human mode of expression for thousands of years, probably before we humans learned to talk. Through it, we connected with allies while demonstrating our connection with people we didn’t know. In the present, laughter allows us to enjoy positive shared experiences with strangers and loved ones alike. Yet solitary laughter has its own range of benefits. An energetic and enthusiastic bout of whole-body laughter exercises the muscles, the lungs, and the mind in equal measure, leaving us feeling relaxed and content. When we laugh heartily at life’s ridiculousness instead of responding irritably, our focus shifts. Anger, stress, guilt, and sadness no longer have any influence over us, and we are empowered to make light of what we originally feared. Laughter also opens our hearts, letting love and light in, changing our perspective, and enabling us to fix our attention on what is positive in our lives.

It is easy to laugh when we feel good, but it is when the world appears dim that we most need laughter in our lives. Our laughter then resonates through our hearts, filling the empty spaces with pure, unadulterated joy. We regain our footing in the moment and remember that no sorrow is powerful enough to rob us of our inborn happiness. When we understand that uninhibited laughter is the food of the soul, nourishing us from within, we know instinctively that life is worthwhile.

When Doors Open

When you see  a door open, walk through it. Trust that the door has opened for a reason and you have been guided to it. Sometimes we have a tendency to overanalyse our decision, but it is quicker to simply go through the door and discover what’s there, as that’s the only way to find out. Even if it doesn’t seem right at first, opening this door may lead to another door that will take us where we need to go.

A door opens when the time is right for us to enter a new space, metaphorically speaking, and we can have faith that walking through is the right thing to do. Sometimes we linger in the threshold because we are afraid of leaving our old life or stepping out of our comfort zone for a life we know nothing about. We may have voices inside of our heads that try to hold us back or people in our lives saying discouraging things. These internal voices, express all the fears and doubts that arise at the beginning of a new life. The external voices come from people who don’t want us to move forward. Nevertheless, none of these voices can hold us back, and they will fall silent as soon as we cross the threshold.

There are a myriad of doors that open in the course of our lives, leading us into new relationships, jobs, friendships, and creative inspirations. Our lives up to this point are the result of all the doors we have walked through, and our continued growth depends on our willingness to keep moving into new spaces. Every time we walk through an open door, we create a sense memory that encourages us to move into the new fearlessly. When we enter the new space, we almost always feel a thrill and a new feeling of confidence, in ourselves and in the universe. We have stepped across the threshold into a new life.
