Forgiveness

Forgiveness is such an important subject that I feel compelled to spend some time explaining its significance. When we hold something unforgiven inside, we are nurturing anger, hatred and resentment or maybe even guilt. These emotions lock us into the moment, continually reliving events.  Over time all this emotion can become suppressed into the subconscious, but it is still there, consuming our mental and life energy.

Until we release ourselves from this cycle, it may prove impossible to move forward. It really does not matter what the issue was, whether slight or life-shatteringly traumatic. If you want to move on you must let it go. To do this you must forgive. To forgive someone does not mean that that you condone their behaviour simply that you forgive them, and release them. By releasing and forgiving them, you release yourself.

Some people hold onto their anger, refusing to forgive or let go.  They will never move on until they do. In fact, quite the reverse, by allowing such emotions to ferment inside, they grow and can become all consuming, their whole life becoming defined by whatever the event was. They are no longer in control of their life or living the life they want. They are living a life that is directed by their anger and hurt.

How our lives are, is often a reflection of our reactions to the ups and downs of life.  If we choose to accept the good and release the bad, we are able to maintain control over our lives and keep our sense of direction.  If, however, we  focus on the bad things that have happened to us, then these will simply grow, continually manifesting our own dark thoughts and divert us from seeking what we really want.

If you or your life is “stuck”, then it is well worth looking back to see if there is anything unforgiven in your past.  Remember to forgive everyone, especially yourself.  So many people trudge through their lives burdened with guilt for this or that, forgive yourself and let it go.

Remember, life is in the now, the past is already finished and dead and cannot be changed. Nothing you can do now, can ever change the past, yet it is amazing how many people squander their emotional and life energy, consumed with anger or guilt about the past. The future has yet to happen, it is an incomplete equation.  We cannot predict how it will turn out. In this moment now, you have your power – the power to make your choices, take your action, to make a difference.  You have no power in the past and you have no assurance of power in the future. If you want to feel free, released from the past, then you must forgive.  Forgive everyone, especially yourself. I know how difficult it is to overcome our natural and very human feelings of anger, guilt, resentment and fear. The basis of them can seem, and may well be, completely justified, you may be completely right to have these emotions, and it is okay to experience them.  However, these emotions damage your ability to move on.  You must accept your emotions, but then be prepared to let them go. To release yourself, you must forgive. Until you do you will remain the victim with your life locked into all those negative emotions.

Look around you, do you know anyone like that?  Some tragedy or injustice has been suffered and now the entire life of that person is defined by their anger and resentment. Every positive thought, every inspired moment, all of life’s little pleasures are subsumed with their overwhelming feelings of anger, resentment, even desire for revenge. No matter how justified their emotions are, what good is it doing them?  None. The past can never be changed.  Life is full of tragedy and joy, it is not the events of life so much as how we respond to them that defines how joyous and successful our lives are. Remember to listen to your innate thinking, your inner voice when it tells you how to forgive.

Moving forward in your life

People come into our lives for a reason.  Sometimes we are not sure why until they have gone. But even that is good, because we always learn something from every single person who touches our lives.

We learn a myriad of things from so many different people. Some who have such amazing stories to tell, some who have simple stories to tell.  Some people who are only now beginning their journey of self-discovery, some who have travelled a long way along it’s path.

Every single person has their own perspective, their own thoughts and dreams. Each and every one of us is following our own paths to discover what is lying ahead of us.

Accept that your life does not resemble anybody else’s. Everybody’s life is totally unique to them. Live your life the way you want to. You can happily co-exist with lots of like-minded people if you choose to.

Challenge your limiting beliefs about your life. Discover why you have those limiting beliefs. Open your mind to the possibility that you are not as limited in your life as you first thought. Open your mind to the endless possibilities that are out there, great or small. Be prepared to extend your thinking beyond what it has been, up until now. Be prepared to expand your norm.

Examine your attitudes. Decide whether they really are your attitudes, or whether they are attitudes imposed upon you by parents, guardians, siblings, teachers and so on. Once you have established which are yours and which are imposed, make the decision to alter the ones that are imposed upon you (but only if you disagree with them or they just don’t sit right with you).

Make one small change in your behaviour to create a huge change in your life. It doesn’t have to be anything dramatic, it could just be changing the filling in your sandwich. Start small and work up to bigger changes, but make sure the changes are the ones that you want to make.

Attract different people to you. By changing your perceptions, your attitude and your behaviour you will begin to attract different people to you. Your circle of friends will expand and offer you even more choices. Make the choices that are right for you.

Change your attitude to yourself; believe that you are capable, that you are beautiful, that you are lovable. Learn to love and respect yourself.

Intend to create your life. Picture your life in great detail, make it bright, colourful and clear. Add as much detail as possible to the picture. See what you will look like in your new life, hear what people are saying to you and about you, feel what it will be like in your new life.  If you don’t like what you are seeing or hearing, change the details in the picture until you get exactly what you want. Make it as bright as you can, see what you see, hear what you hear, feel what you feel.  Step into your picture, be part of your new life.

Life is too short to live it on somebody else’s terms. Live the life you want to live and be happy.  Expect more from life and you will get it. Don’t settle for anything less.

I would love to hear from you about your experiences.

I offer coaching and mentoring to you – for you to make the changes you want to in your life. Build your confidence in your abilities.  Read my clients’ testimonials here. To help you to have more fun, more freedom and less stress. That is it. There is no catch. I believe in you.

Experiences we may not understand yet

Sometimes we have an experience and we don’t understand why, but if we look deeply, or wait long enough, a reason will usually reveal itself for that experience.  Interestingly, all the events in our lives lead to other events, in fact all that we are experiencing in this present moment is the result of past events and experiences. We cannot easily tease apart the many threads that have been woven together to create our current reality. Experiences that don’t appear to make sense, as well as any that we may regret, are just as responsible for the good things in our lives as the experiences we do understand or label as “good.”

It is especially important to remember these experiences at times when we feel directionless or unsure of what to do.  Often at times like these we take a job or move to a place without really knowing if it’s the right thing to do. We may ultimately end up leaving that job or the place, but often during that time we will have met someone who becomes an important friend, or we may have an experience that changes us in a profound way. When all the pieces of our life don’t quite make sense, we can remember that there may be some hidden gem of a reason that we are where we are having the experiences we are having.

It’s fun to look back on past experiences with an eye to uncovering those gems.  That awful temporary job in a bland office building that introduced you to the love of your life; the roommate you couldn’t tolerate who gave you a book that changed your life; the time spent living in a town you didn’t like that led you into a deeper relationship with yourself. Remembering these past experiences can restore our faith in the present. Life is full of buried treasures. Chances are, you’re sitting on some right now.

I would love to hear from you about your experiences.

Remember the Sun

There are times when darkness or gloom causes us to momentarily lose sight of the light. And it is at these times when we think of the sun that it can help us.  Its warm, glowing rays brighten  our thoughts, and it’s good to remember that despite appearances the sun is shining right now. We may not be able to see it at this very moment if clouds are blocking our view, but remember they are only filtering the sun’s light temporarily. If darkness has fallen, we know that the sun is still shining at this very moment somewhere in the world not too far away, and it’s only a matter of time before it will shine on us again.

When we remember that the sun is still shining, we know that things are still in motion in the universe. Even if life feels like it is at a standstill, sometimes all we need to do is believe and wait for the time when everything is in its perfect place. Or we can we can choose to follow the cues of the sun and continue doing our work and shining our light, even when we can’t yet see results.  In doing this we exercise our patience, making sure we are prepared when opportunity knocks and all other elements are in their right and perfect places.

The sun also reminds us that our own shining truth is never extinguished. Our light shines within us at all times, no matter what else occurs around us. The sun gives us daily proof of its existence, but sometimes our belief in our own light requires a bit  more time.  If we think back, however, we can find moments when it showed itself and trust that we will see it again. Like the sun, our light is the energy that connects us to the movements of the universe and the cycles of life and is present at all times, whether we feel its glow or not.

The wisdom of surrender

Many of us know the feeling of being repeatedly haunted by the same issue, no matter how we try to ignore it, avoid it, or run away from it. Sometimes it seems that we can get rid of something we don’t want by simply pushing it away. But Most of the time, the more we push away, the more we get pushed back. There are laws of physics and metaphysics that explain this phenomenon, which is often summed up in this phrase: That which you resist persists.

monochrome photo of resist signage

Resistance can strengthen the energies it attempts to oppose by giving them power and energy to work against. And of course resistance keeps us from learning more about what we resist. In order to fully understand something, we must open to it enough to receive its energy; otherwise, we remain ignorant of its lessons. There is a Tibetan story of a monk who retreats to meditate in a cave only to be plagued by demons. He tries everything—chasing, fighting, hiding—to get the demons out of his cave, but the thing that finally works is surrender. He simply lets them have their way with him and only then do they disappear.

Now, this wisdom must be applied practically. We are not meant to get ourselves physically injured. Instead, this story speaks of how, in essence, our demons are inside of us. What plagues and pursues us on an inner level has a way of manifesting itself in our environment in the form of people, events, and issues that appear to be beyond our control. But all these external expressions are reflections of our insides, and it is inside ourselves that we can safely experiment with surrendering to what we fear and dislike. It may feel scary, and we may find ourselves in the company of a lot of resistance as we begin the process of opening to what we fear. But the more we learn to surrender, and the more the demons that plague us disappear in the process, the more courageous we will become.

Clinging to our core

You may have noticed times when your whole world seems to be falling apart around you, and you are not sure what to hold onto anymore.  Sometimes this can be because relationships crumble and sometimes it’s can be the physical environment.  At other times, it is difficult to put a finger on it, but it feels as if all the walls have fallen down around us with nothing to lean on, exposed and vulnerable.  These are the times in our lives when we are given an opportunity to see where we have established our sense of identity, safety, and well-being.  And while it is perfectly natural and part of our process to locate our sense of self in external things, any time those external factors shift, we have an opportunity to rediscover and move closer to our core, which is the only truly safe place we have to call home.

The core of our being is not affected by the shifting winds of circumstance or affected by the cycles of change that govern physical reality.  It is as steady and consistent as the sun, which is why the great mystics and mystical poets often reference the sun in their poems to the self. Like the sun, there are times when our core seems to be inaccessible to us, but this is just a misperception. We know that the sun has not disappeared permanently when it goes behind a cloud or sets for the night, it is simply temporarily out of sight. In the same way, we can trust that our inner core is always shining brightly, even when we cannot quite see it.

We can cling to this core when things around us are falling apart, knowing that the light that shines from within ourselves is inexhaustible.  Those times of external darkness can be a great gift in that they provide an opportunity to remember this inner light that shines regardless of the circumstances of our lives. When our external lives begin to come back together, and they will, we are able to lean less heavily on the structures we used to call home, knowing more clearly than ever that our true home is that bright sun shining in our core.

Purpose

Most living things are born knowing their purpose in life. For instance, an animal will spend its day foraging for food, taking care of itself and its young, and creating a home. No one tells an animal to do this, yet it instinctively knows how. Humans, however, usually are not born consciously knowing what their purpose is.

No one tells an animal to do this, yet it instinctively knows how. Humans, however, usually are not born consciously knowing what their purpose is.

Purpose gives our life meaning. When you discover your purpose, you will live your life with intention and make the choices that serve your objective for why you are here on the planet. Finding your purpose is not always easy. Some people may never find their purpose. You must embrace life wholeheartedly, explore many different pathways, and allow yourself to grow. Your purpose is as unique as you are and will evolve as you move through life. You don’t need anyone’s permission to fulfil your purpose, and no one can tell you what that purpose is. Finding and fulfilling your purpose can be a lifelong endeavour. To figure out what your purpose is, ask yourself what drives you,  not what forces you out of bed in the morning, but what makes you happy to be alive. Make a list of activities that you wish you were involved in or think about a career path that you would love to embark upon. These are the endeavours that can help you fulfil your purpose and bring you the most satisfaction.

Imagine yourself working on projects that don’t interest you or fulfil your purpose, yet they help satisfy your basic survival needs. Imagine how living this way each day would make you feel. Next, imagine yourself devoting your time to projects that spark your imagination, inspire, excite, and satisfy you. More often than not, these activities are some of the ways that you can fulfil your life purpose. Time spent on these endeavours will never feel like a waste. Live your life with purpose, and you will feel significant and capable because every action you take and each choice you make will have meaning to it.

I would love to hear from you about your experiences.

Having It Easy

In our lives we are often facing challenges. We dream the grandest of dreams as young people only to discover that we must have enormous inner strength and determination in order to meet our goals. Our hard work does not always yield the results we expect though.  And it is when we find ourselves frustrated by the trials we face or we seem to be  unable to meet our own expectations that we are most likely to take notice of those individuals who appear to accomplish great feats effortlessly. Some people’s lives seem to magically fall into place. We can see the blessings they have received, the ease with which they have attained their desires, their unwavering confidence, and their wealth. But, we can never see the story of their lives as a whole, therefore it is important that we don’t pass judgement or becoming envious.

In general we glimpse only the outer hull of others’ life experiences, so it’s tempting to believe that the abundance they enjoy is the result of luck rather than diligent effort.  This may be the case in a small number of people so our assumptions may mirror reality. But very few people “have it easy.” We all must overcome difficulties and each of us has been granted a distinctive set of talents with which to do so. Someone who is highly gifted may nonetheless have to practice industriously and correct themselves repeatedly so they can cultivate their talents. Their myriad of accomplishments are more likely than not the result of ongoing hard work and sacrifice. You, no doubt, have natural abilities that you have nurtured and your gifts may be the very reason you strive as tirelessly as you do. Yet others see only the outcome of your efforts and not the efforts themselves

The universe is constantly testing our intellects, our hearts, and our souls. Life will create new challenges for you to face each time you prove yourself capable of overcoming the challenges of the past. What you think is difficult will always differ from that which others think is difficult. The tests you will be given will be as unique as you are. If you focus on doing the best you can and making use of the blessings you have been granted, the outcome of your efforts will be the reflection of your dedication.

I would love to hear from you about your experiences.

Creating a sanctuary in your garden

We all have an innate need to celebrate life. At a most basic level, we honour the forces that came together to bring us into being by caring for our bodies and our souls. To truly enjoy our existence, we must also learn to cultivate loveliness in those special places that replenish the soul. When we create a sanctuary in our garden, we are reminded that we are a part of both nature’s essence and something more. An outdoor retreat is a place where we can surround ourselves in nature, beauty and the life force. It is not difficult to create a sanctuary we should endeavour, however, to create sanctuaries that speak to us as individuals.

Whether we have a balcony, a grassy corner, a patio, or a porch at our disposal, our creative potential is infinite. Any of these spaces can become a magnificent garden. If we are drawn to specific themes such as Zen, angels, paradise, or the ethereal, we should explore them. Décor and furniture crafted from natural materials like wood and stone blend seamlessly into nature. Although we can also augment the natural world by decorating our garden sanctuaries with statues, bells or gongs, or colourful flags. Running water, like that in a created stream or fountain, helps energy flow smoothly. If space is a concern, crystals and mirrors can fulfil the same function. Hidden features like concealed swings and reflecting pools veiled in shadow can surprise and delight. As your garden sanctuary evolves, remember to invite the elemental spirits of nature to assist you in your efforts to create a small pocket of harmony, beauty, and peace in your own garden. If you have not already felt their presence, sit quietly in your garden and reach out to them. You will feel these earthly guides at your side as you continue to develop your sanctuary.

In the sanctuary of brilliant colour, sweet scents, and stillness you create in your garden, the burdens imposed upon you by a sometimes hectic world will melt away. The splendour and tranquility of what you have brought into being will entrance you, allowing you to forget the constraints of time and space. No matter how large or small your garden sanctuary, the time you spend revelling in its pleasures will refresh your spirit and provide you with innumerable opportunities to celebrate life.

Accepting Compliments

It is interesting how many of us find it difficult to accept compliments but we find it easy to believe the slightest criticism. Let’s make a choice today to fully accept compliments as we would a gift. Sincere compliments are gifts of praise. They are virtual trophies given for wise choices or accomplishments or perhaps for just letting your light shine. There is no reason not to accept the gift of a kind word, but some of us argue against them, even giving reasons why they aren’t true.

If we could see the energy of a compliment, we would see beautiful, shining, positive energy being sent from the giver. That energy, when accepted graciously, will brighten our personal energy field. Our gratitude for the compliment then returns to the giver as warm, fuzzy, glowing energy, completing an even circuit of good feelings. However, when we reject a compliment, what could have been a beautiful exchange becomes awkward and uncomfortable, making it a negative experience instead. Misplaced modesty can ruin the joy of sharing this connection with another person. But we can accept a compliment and still be modest by simply saying “thank you.”  However, if compliments are rejected due to a lack of self-esteem, then the first step would be to start believing good things about yourself.  Try giving yourself compliments in the mirror. Beyond the initial feelings of silliness, you will notice how good it feels and can watch the smile it puts on your face. The next step would be to see how it feels to give compliments to others.  Notice how great you feel when you’ve made another person’s face brighten and how differently you feel when the gift you’ve offered is rejected.  Having experienced all sides, you will be ready to accept compliments fully and willingly.

We are our harshest critics. When we accept compliments, we are reminded that others see us through different eyes. All living beings crave positive attention, and we all deserve to have positive energy shared with us.  When we happily and gratefully accept compliments, we give others permission to do so as well.

I would love to hear from you about your experiences.
