How to survive Valentine’s Day as a single person

Take advantage of you and really look after yourself on this day. Turn the focus of your attention to you. Buy yourself something special, something you will really love and appreciate. It maybe something that you wouldn’t usually think of buying for yourself, but on this occasion it feels right to do it. Here are some more suggestions for you to feel special on this loving day:

  • treat yourself to a day being pampered at the spa. Or
  • treat yourself to a special meal and enjoy it in the comfort of your own home. It can be a take away delivered to your door.  Use your favourite crockery, buy a bottle of wine and enjoy your chosen feast. Or
  • watch your favourite film or read a good book. Or
  • How about you and some of your best friends getting together to watch a few of the worst romantic comedy films you can find.  Have a fun evening with people you love to be with and who love to be with you.
  • Make a Valentine’s Day resolution to love yourself.  Resolve to take some evening classes or to go on that trip you have been promising yourself.  Resolve to try new restaurants or to try new recipes.  Make a resolution that you will make a start towards the dreams you know you want to achieve.
  • If you have children why not make the day special for them as well as you.  Buy some little gifts – chocolates, stuffed toys, model cars etc. – and make a present hunt game with clues, and they can fun trying to find the gifts and you will have fun watching them.

Whatever it is you choose to do, whether it is on your own, with friends or with your children, make sure it is fun for you.

Do not:

  • Find a stranger to spend the night with.  You will regret it in the morning and make it worse for yourself when the next Valentine’s Day comes around.
  • Watch tv programmes filled with loves stories.
  • Get all dressed up at work as your colleagues will jump to conclusions and make your life a misery all day.
  • Sit at home being miserable and feeling sorry for yourself because you don’t have someone to share this sill day with.
  • Beat yourself up for feeling miserable and lonely.

A great thing to do would be to wait until February 15th and then treat yourself to a heart-shaped box of chocolates at half price, or buy some flowers for yourself for half price.

Remember, it is just one day.  It will all be over in the morning.

Plan your life around yourself and learn to really love yourself again.  This will not only be fun and interesting, but loving yourself is the basis of beginning your new life as the new, confident you.

If this has resonated with you get in touch today. Through personalised guidance, I will help you to learn to rebuild your self confidence, help you learn that you are special and change the way you are thinking about what you think about yourself.

Celebrate Everyday Life

We have probably all heard of someone who keeps plastic covers on their settee in order to protect it. The irony is that many of these people may live their lives without ever having actually made contact with their own furniture.  This is an amusing example of the human tendency to try to save things for special occasions, as if everyday life isn’t special enough to warrant the use of nice things. Many of us have had the experience of never wearing a particular piece of clothing in order to keep it for a special occasion, only to never wear it.

Photo by Vika Glitter on Pexels.com

It’s interesting to think of what it would mean to us if we were to allow ourselves to wear our nicest clothes and eat off the ‘good’ china on a daily basis. We might send ourselves the message that every day we are alive is a special day and a cause for celebration, and that we are worth it. There is something uplifting about treating ourselves to the finest of what we have.  It is as if we rise to the occasion when we wear our best clothes and set the table beautifully, as if for a very special guest. We are more mindful of where we place things, what we are eating, and who is with us. Using the good china, eating in the dining room, and taking the plastic off the sofa might be an invitation to be more conscious of the beauty and grace inherent in our everyday lives.

If there are things you’ve stashed away for a special occasion, maybe a bottle of special wine, a gorgeous pair of shoes, an antique lace tablecloth, consider taking them out of their hiding places and putting them to use today, just because you are alive now to enjoy them, and that’s a great cause for a celebration.

If this has resonated with you get in touch today. Through personalised guidance, I will help you to learn to rebuild your self confidence, help you learn that every day is a special day and change the way you are thinking about what you think about yourself.

Blaming Others

When we understand that the world outside of us is a reflection of the world inside of us, we could feel confused about who is to blame for the problems in our lives. If we had a difficult childhood, we may wonder how we can take responsibility for that, and in our current relationships, the same question arises. We all know that blaming others is the opposite of taking responsibility, but we may not understand how to take responsibility for things that we don’t feel responsible for. We may blame our parents for our low self-esteem, and we may blame our current partner for exacerbating it with their unconscious behaviour. Objectively, this seems to make sense. After all, it is not our fault if our parents were irresponsible or unkind, and we are not to blame for our partner’s bad behaviour.

Perhaps the problem lies with the action of blaming. Whether we blame others or blame ourselves, there is something aggressive and unkind about it. It sets up a situation in which it becomes difficult to move forward with the feelings of shame and guilt that arise. It also puts the resolution of our pain in the hands of someone other than us. Ultimately, we cannot insist that someone else take responsibility for their actions; only they can make that choice when they are ready. In the meantime, if we want to move forward with our lives instead of waiting around for something that may or may not happen, we begin to see the wisdom of taking the situation into our own hands.

We do this by forgiving our parents, even if they have not asked for our forgiveness, so that we can be free. We end the abusive relationship with our partner, who may never admit to any wrongdoing, because we are willing to take responsibility for how we are treated. In short, we love ourselves as we want to be loved and create the life we know we deserve. We leave the resolution of the wrongs committed against us in the hands of the universe, releasing ourselves to live a life free of blame.

If this has resonated with you get in touch today. Through personalised guidance, I will help you to learn to rebuild your self confidence, understand how forgiveness works and change the way you are thinking about what you think about yourself.

Uplifting Showers

Water falling from the sky has been interpreted in many different ways by numerous cultures. In various areas of the world, rain was viewed as a nourishing gift, given by well-pleased deities. Rain has also been viewed as a symbol of emotional cleansing and representing the unending union between earth and sky. Today, rain is often seen as an annoyance, something to be borne doggedly while attending to one’s usual duties. But the arrival of one or more rainy days can also be interpreted as a signal to slow down and contemplate life. When Mother Nature darkens the sky and causes drizzle to fall, freshly opened buds close and many animals settle into their nests for a snooze. We can honour rainy days by following the example put forth by the flora and fauna around us. Even if we must venture out into a shower, we can still slow down and appreciate our connection to nature.

A rainy day spent indoors can be wonderfully uplifting. As the rain pours down, fill your home with light, sound, and comfort so that you can fully appreciate the loveliness of being snug and dry during a downpour. Storms literally change the energy in the air, and you may feel driven to follow suit by lighting candles or singing. You may even feel compelled to talk to each room in your home in order to express your gratitude for the protection they give you. If, however, you feel claustrophobic rather than calm because you cannot venture outdoors, you can clear away negative energy by getting rid of clutter, sweeping away dust, and freshening your up spaces. The happier you are in your home, the more beautiful and wondrous a simple rain shower will seem.

A sheltered spot like a covered porch, sunroom, or bay window can provide you with a wonderful vantage point from which to watch the raindrops as they make their descent to earth. And the pitter-patter of rain on a rooftop or car window can even be a therapeutic and soothing sound, one that reminds us that while the unforeseen will always be a part of our lives, we should never forget that nearly every cloud that comes into our lives will have a silver lining.

Are You Holding on to Things You ‘Should’ Do?

A lot of people carry around with them a large amount of “baggage” or “clutter” in their minds. When I say this I mean that they are still holding onto things that they say they ‘should’ do, but they really don’t need to. The ‘coulds’ and ‘shoulds’ in your life that hold you back – you want to let go, but you don’t. An example is worrying about whether they should have bought that handbag they liked even though they couldn’t afford it. Worrying about it and continuing to carry around that clutter doesn’t do anyone any good. This is very common with people going through or in the aftermath of divorce. You are not alone, I have done it myself.

Are you carrying around with you a lot of emotional attention that you really could be doing without instead of focusing on something more productive? Are you like this? If you are, I bet it has a negative influence on your confidence and self esteem. Take a look at your life and get rid of this baggage by asking yourself some questions and by completing the following exercise. In effect, what you are doing is making certain tasks “complete”, drawing a line under them and moving on. Another term for this is “psychological completion” or just “completion”.

The following questions can be taken at one sitting or over a number of hours/days. By writing the answers down they become more formal. Get to it and watch your confidence soar!

• Make a list of 10 things that you are putting up with at home

• Make a list of 10 things that you are putting up with at work

• Make a list of 10 things that you are putting up with in any other areas of your life

Are you surprised at what you are putting up with in your life?

Make an action plan of how to reduce this number! Take action!

• Do you need to clear the air with anyone? If so, just do it! Life is too short!

• Did you ever say that you were going to call someone or keep in touch with someone yet have done nothing about it? If yes, call them or send an email to them today.

Let go of as many coulds, woulds, shoulds, maybes, oughts as you can. Take action!

By completing these exercises you will be able to focus more on the here, the now and the future. You will now be able to let go of some of the things that have been taking up your valuable attention units – those things that knock your self esteem.

Do you want to remain stuck and miserable? If your answer is no, take action.

If this has resonated with you get in touch today. Through personalised guidance, I will help you to learn to rebuild your self confidence and change the way you are thinking about what you think about yourself.

Gaslighting is very subtle

Gaslighting can feel so subtle in the beginning. A passing comment that makes you doubt yourself. A quiet dismissal of your feelings. A disagreement where you walk away wondering if you really did remember incorrectly. That’s the tricky thing about gaslighting it often starts small, almost invisible, until one day you realise you’re questioning your own reality. For many, gaslighting is a trait of a narcissistic relationship, a way of another person keeping you off balance and unsure of yourself.

If you’ve experienced this, understand that it’s not your fault and you’re not imagining things. Gaslighting is intended to confuse you, but the fact that you’re noticing it now is a sign of your strength. When you can name these patterns for what they are, you can begin to reclaim your confidence, rebuild your sense of self, and take meaningful steps toward healthier relationships.

Healing from the effects of gaslighting and narcissistic behaviour is possible u and it’s a deeply empowering journey. You deserve to feel grounded in your own truth again, to set boundaries that honour you, and to trust your inner knowing. There’s a brighter, more peaceful chapter ahead of you, and every small step you take brings you closer to the love and respect you know you have always deserved.

If this has resonated with you get in touch today. Through personalised guidance, I will help you to learn to rebuild your self confidence and change the way you are thinking about what you think about yourself.

Stop overthinking

Overthinking creates problems that don’t exist. It will steal your happiness, making everyhing seem worse that it actually is. Take a deep breath in. Exhale and have faith. What is meant to be will be.

When you stop overthinking, that’s when things gent to fall into place. Even if it’s not clear right now, everything will be okay.

Embrace the uncertainty, as it makes life special. Remember, life is not a problem to be solved, it is a rality to be experienced. Allow yourself to be present, to feel and to grow.

By letting go of overthinking you make space for joy, peace and fulfilment to enter your life.

If this has resonated with you get in touch today. Through personalised guidance, I will help you to stop overthinking and change the way you are thinking about what you think about yourself.

Let them

Let them call you selfish. Protecting your peace is vital.

Let them think you are quiet. Not everyone deserves to hear your words.

Let them roll their eyes. Your happiness is not up for debate.

Let them judge your choices. You are the one living with those choices.

Photo by Engin Akyurt on Pexels.com

Let them walk in and out. Consistency is their responsibility, it is not yours.

Let them call you different. It means you are not blending into the crowd.

Let them think you are too much. You are simply not for them.

Let them mock your boundaries. You built them for protection, not for their approval.

Let them talk behind your back. That is where they belong.

Let them underestimate your strength. Storms create warriors, not whispers.

If this has resonated with you get in touch today. Through personalised guidance, I will help you to ‘let them’ and change the way you are thinking about what you think about yourself.

Remember the lighter side

Often when we talk about fun or doing things just for fun, we talk about it in a dismissive way as if fun is not that important. We tend to value hard work and seriousness, and we forget to pay our respects to the equally important, light side of laughter and silliness. This is ironic because we all know the feeling of euphoria that follows a good burst of laughter, and how it can leave us less stressed. We are far more likely to walk down the street smiling and open after we’ve had a good laugh, and this tends to catch on, inspiring smiles from the people we pass who then positively influence everyone they encounter. Witnessing this kind of chain reaction, or ripple effect, makes us think that having fun might be one of our most powerful tools for changing the world.

Laughter is good medicine, and we all have this medicine available to us whenever we recall a funny story or act in a silly way. We magnify the effects of this medicine when we share it with the people in our lives. If we are lucky, they will have something funny to share with us as well, and the life-loving sound of laughter will continue to roll out of our mouths and into the world.

Of course, it is also important to allow ourselves to be serious and to honour that side of ourselves so that we stay balanced. After a great deal of merriment, it can actually be a pleasure to settle down and focus on work, or even take some time for introspection until our next round of fun begins.

If this has resonated with you get in touch today. Through personalised guidance, I will help you to create your own boundaries so you will rebuild confidence in yourself and learn to have fun.
