Treat yourself to a self-healing day

We all carry within us the seed of healing. Our choices can affect us more than we realise, and it is because of this that we tend to place responsibility for our wellness in the hands of others. As beneficial as regular visits to a practitioner can be, a chiropractor, massage therapist,  we have the power to heal ourselves at will. When we dedicate a day to the pursuit of wellness, we can relax and renew ourselves in a nourishing and comfortable environment. A sincere desire to open ourselves to the highest realities of our physical and spiritual selves is the key to self-healing so that healing energy can flow into us unimpeded.

Your self-healing day should address your vital needs as a whole person while directing healing energy where it is needed most. Solitude is an important part of the process as is the ability to take find a space that is both beautiful and peaceful. Start your healing day by setting the intention that you are dedicating this time to healing yourself. Choose flowers, candlelight, incense, music or in nature to  guide your focus toward a more tranquil state. For a more intense session, try listening to music through headphones since tuning out can help you tune in. It is up to you to decide what you need to do to cultivate wellness in your life. For some, it may be time spent in reflection. Others will turn to calming activities that help them remember their purpose, such as journal writing, being in nature, or studying. Your healing may even take a more direct form as you use colour, sound, or crystals to balance and ground yourself.

Ultimately, your nourishing intentions transform what might otherwise be a simple day of rest into a day of healing. Grant yourself permission to relax and savour the stillness. If you attune yourself to the calm around you, worldly distractions will be minimised and the unadulterated flow of your consciousness will reestablish itself in the forefront of your mind. The needs of the body, the heart, and the soul will then be revealed to you, empowering you to tap into the essential healing energy of the universe. The mechanism you use to channel this energy will be dependent on your shifting requirements, so each day of healing you enjoy will be unique. All will replenish you, however, allowing you to recreate yourself in a perfect image of health.

Create your nightly ritual

At the end of each day, as the dark stillness of night invites us to lay down and rest, we find ourselves at a clear transition point. Behind us lies the previous day and all that has come before; ahead of us, the dawn announces the unfolding of all that is still to be. There are many of us who have morning rituals that connect us with our centre and help us set our intentions, and we may want to explore the magic and power of a nighttime ritual as well.  It holds for us a beautiful chance for self-appreciation and blessing. Before you go to bed each night, you can send gratitude, compassion, and healing to the being you have been up until this moment. And you can send lightness and love into the future for the one you are in the process of becoming.

Photo by Claire Morgan on Pexels.com

Though very simple, this action honours the journey you have taken thus far, while opening you to the wonderful possibilities ahead. When you consciously engage with your own evolution this way, you may find that your sleep gets more pleasant filling your night with a deeper sense of trust and relaxation. As you rest, you can surrender to these peaceful hours, knowing that the road behind you has been seen and acknowledged with respect and kindness, and the path ahead now holds your own goodwill and well wishes.

This nightly ritual empowers you as the only one who can determine the meaning of your own past and the hopefulness of your future. By setting this special time aside each night, you can begin to orient yourself on your path of growing. It allows you to let the past have its place, to trust that the future is taken care of, and to simply rest yourself in the elegant arms of the present moment.

Being happy for other people

It isn’t always easy to be the kind of person who is happy for others when they experience success or a cause for celebration in their lives. Sometimes powerful, dark feelings and resentment come up at times when decorum dictates we should be feeling the opposite. Instead of reaching out and celebrating our loved one, we may feel the rising up of our own pain. This pain may appear because we feel jealous of our friend for having something we don’t. It may appear because our friend’s success will lead to us losing them in some way. And it may appear for reasons we don’t yet understand. The important thing is not to brush it under the rug, but to take it seriously and look at it; suppressing it will only make it worse. At the same time, we need to be sure to find a way to congratulate our friends and celebrate their successes as if they were our own.

Photo by Stephan Seeber on Pexels.com

The struggle with being happy for others often presents itself early in life. If a child wants a toy and another child has it, the child will try to get it or will break down in tears. Those primal feelings are still present in most of us, and we have to acknowledge them when they arise. At the same time, it is when we care enough for someone to let go of what we want for ourselves that we grow as people. It can be a difficult dance to find ourselves suspended between wanting the toy and throwing a party for our friend who got the toy. Yet, it is in throwing the party that we share in the joy and, to some extent, the toy rather than cutting ourselves out of it.

Extending ourselves to celebrate the happiness of others requires a generosity of spirit that we sometimes find only in the process of doing it. So when your best friend moves to somewhere hot and balmy with the person you had a crush on, tend to your broken heart but throw them a going away party too.

Get out of your own way

It can be easy to feel “stuck” or that “life” is creating circumstances preventing you from getting what you want. When you find yourself facing obstacles that appear to be blocking you from your goals, it is important to try not to get discouraged.  And while it is easy to look at everyone and everything outside of ourselves for the problem, perhaps even wanting to “get rid” of the person, object, or circumstance we may feel is blocking us, sometimes the best course of action to take may be to look inside ourselves first.

Photo by Garrett johnson on Pexels.com

It is amazing how often we can get in our own way without even being aware that we are doing so. Even though we truly want to succeed, there are many reasons why we may sometimes block our own efforts. It may be that we are afraid to succeed, so we subconsciously create circumstances to keep ourselves stuck. Or it may even be that we are afraid that we will succeed, so we block ourselves by making the achievement of our goals more difficult than they really are. We may even approach our goals in a way that keeps creating the same unsuccessful results.

If you believe that you’ve been getting in your own way, you may want to take a piece of paper and record how you’ve done so. Write down the choices you’ve made that have hindered your efforts and the fears that may have prompted you to make these decisions. Take note of any thoughts and feelings that arise. It is important to be gentle and compassionate during this process. Try not to blame yourself for getting in your own way. Remember the choices we make always are there to serve us, until it is time to let them go. When you are finished, throw the paper away while setting an intention that you are getting rid of any obstacles you’ve created to block yourself. You can then let yourself start again with a clean slate. Doubts and fears are going to be natural, but with this new awareness, you should be able to prevent yourself from subconsciously thwarting yourself. Besides, now that you’ve decided to get out of your own way, the part of you that has always wanted to succeed can now do so.

Stop dragging the weight of the past

When we hold onto regret it is like dragging the weight of the past with us.  We find that It drains our energy, leaving less available for life in the present because we are constantly feeding an old issue. This attachment can cause illness in the same way watering a dead plant creates decay. We know that something new and beautiful can grow in its place if we prepare the soil and plant the right seeds. We also know that we create our lives from our thoughts, so dwelling on the past may actually recreate a situation in our lives where we are forced to make that choice again and again. We can choose to move on right now by applying what we have learned to the present and perhaps even sharing with others, transforming the energy into something that is constructive and creative for ourselves and others.

Photo by Jonathan Lusilva on Pexels.com

We find that forgiveness is the soothing balm that can heal regret. When we sit quietly, we can imagine discussing the issue with the self of our past and offering our forgiveness for that choice. We can ask ourselves for forgiveness for being locked in that space of judgment for so long. We also may want to ask forgiveness from anyone else who may have been affected. By replaying the event in our minds, we can choose a new ending using all that we now know. Imagine that you have actually gone back into the past and made this change, and then say goodbye to it. Release your former self with a hug and bring forgiveness and love back with you to the present. Since we are usually our harshest critics, it is amazing how powerfully healing it can be to offer ourselves love.

Keeping our minds and our energy fully in the present allows us to fuel our physical and emotional healing and well-being today. This action frees our energy to create the dreams we dream for the future. By taking responsibility and action in the present, we can release our hold on the past.

Offerings of your day

When we have good days, we tend to go over the details later, enjoying them a second and third time as we feel the joy of our good fortune. When we have bad days, we tend to pore over the details of our misfortunes not enjoying them. However, we can reframe those bad days by spending some time before going to bed each night to review the gifts we received that day. Regardless of our evaluation of the day, good, bad, mediocre, we can recall the many blessings that were present. This practice transforms our consciousness as it reveals the fullness at the heart of our lives.

Some days it’s easy to recount the gifts we’ve received; on other days, we have to look harder for the offerings of the day, but once we do, we will find there are always quite a few. There is always something to be grateful for. We can keep it simple and be grateful for the fact that we have a roof over our head, nature, food, and our health. Once we have fully experienced these gifts, we can move outward to the gifts that may require a little more thought such as the gifts of forgiveness, tolerance and acceptance that we may have learned that day. We can also always be grateful for the people in our lives who support us, no matter how bad our day may have been.

Just reviewing the many positive offerings in our lives provides a context for our difficulties that puts them in proper perspective, but we can also make an effort to see the gifts even in adverse circumstances. This can be challenging and may require some practice before it feels authentic, but we have all had the experience of a disappointment or loss leading to a surprising gain. Just remembering this and trusting the give and take of life can help us to remember that sometimes the best gifts of all are the ones we don’t recognise right away. In addition, the lessons we learn in the face of adversity are offerings in their own right, allowing us to count patience, wisdom, and fortitude alongside our other gifts of the day.

The kaleidoscope of life

We tend to gravitate toward people who are most like us, usually in the ways that make us feel comfortable. But life has its way of bringing us into contact with people who challenge us with their differences. It may be an obvious difference reflected in their outward appearance or an invisible but powerful philosophical stance. Even in our closest circle of friends and family, though, there are those that confront us with their different ways of experiencing and expressing life. We can choose to resist, but we can also choose to learn from them and appreciate that they too have a place in the kaleidoscope of life.

As much as we may say that we want peace and quiet and a life without struggle, the truth is that human beings are currently thriving in a world of dualities and challenges. It is how we choose to approach these hurdles that determine if we sail over them, confirming our agility, or trip and end up flat on our faces. And each of us absolutely will and must stumble, and then get up, brush ourselves down, and carry on. This is how we learn and grow, developing depth of character and shades of understanding. In a world of dualities, we have trouble defining ourselves without something opposite and can’t discover who we are. Without challenge, there is nothing to do and nothing to discover. That leaves us either in a state of nonbeing or in the state of pure spirit, but as humans, we are spiritual beings experiencing the physical world in all of its startling contrast and beauty.

No matter how spiritual we are, our lives will have challenges. We will always run into people who are different from us, but the true challenge may be in finding ways to be at peace with this process. Rather than give in to the fight-or-flight response that comes from our animal nature, we can find new ways to evolve together into higher, more beautiful expressions of ourselves, realising, embracing, and celebrating the beauty of diversity and the strength it offers for the future.

How to handle the split loyalties with friends when they separate

I think we have all had this dilemma.  Who do we stay friends with after a couple divorces or separates? Hopefully you can stay friends with both parties, but that can be difficult as we are often dealing with human emotions and judgemental attitudes. Realistically, the divorcing couple will expect you to commit to one side or the other and this often establishes itself way before the final separation or divorce. This is due to our blame culture – it’s always someone else’s fault – when actually there will be many circumstances that overlap and maybe many years later after a lot of reflective thought  we realise each partner was partly to blame for the failure of that relationship. How can you handle the initial expectation to now ignore one or other former partner? It can be really tough for friends of separating partners – which one do you invite to the family party –  can you invite both? – What will happen if they meet at the family wedding? – What will happen if each one brings a new partner?

Photo by RDNE Stock project on Pexels.com

All I can say is there is no set advice or guidance in the form of a one size fits all answer. However, common sense dictates procedures to adopt in order to ensure that your former couple remain friends long after the divorce or separation. Always try to balance being sympathetic and understanding to both friends without actually agreeing to any of their own conclusions regarding blame etc. – remember your only hearing one side of a very unbalanced perspective. Don’t reinforce any biased viewpoints – remain impartial. This will need exemplary diplomatic skills and can actually be both challenging and rewarding.

Make it clear you may still see or respond to each former partner from time to time for obvious and practical reasons. It needs to be made clear by way of simple inexplicit references with your normal conversations that this will happen. It ensures that you are not accused of being a ‘Judas’ and losing the confidence or friendship of either party when they find out that you have had contact with their former partner. Never, ever say to either party what you really thought of their former partner. Just remember that a high proportion of separating couples do actually end up getting back together again. There will of course be a whole host of anomalies that will occur that will need careful thoughtful planning on what your responses will be for each individual case of a divorcing couple. It won’t be easy. But trying to frame your responses within these guidance rules should ensure that your friendship is retained and remains flexible for most situations that may occur over the coming years.

Doing a good turn daily

For some reason it is believed that it is impossible to make a difference without unlimited funding or free time. Although most healing, cleansing, and spreading of joy is accomplished in a matter of minutes. Each of us is more than capable of helping the world, despite our fears and limitations and the uncertainty that holds us back. It is commonly accepted If we vow to make the world a better place one day at a time, the true significance of good deeds, however small, reveals itself to us. We come to see that we can be of service without dedicating our lives to recognised charities or giving up the pleasures we enjoy. The warmth we feel when we help the world is only a tiny part of the affirmative transformations that take place when we make altruism a part of everyday existence.

Photo by cottonbro studio on Pexels.com

We make our homes, workplaces, communities, and countries better and brighter when we think positive thoughts that echo outward, give donations of time or money, smile at everyone we meet, and lend to those in need of aid our assistance. As we learn, we inadvertently improve the universe because we can only be truly involved when we are informed. Even enthusiastically sharing ideas with others generates positive energy that then serves as the motivation for more tangible change. Selfless and helpful deeds remind us that we exercise some degree of control over a world that can seem chaotic at times. Even the smallest of deeds is a demonstration of the fact that we are capable of changing the world in a positive way. So much negative energy is generated by the suffering, pain, and close-mindedness we are regularly exposed to, but we can counteract it in a constructive way by thinking and acting altruistically when opportunities to do so arise.

Helping the world often takes no more than a moment, just a wish for the world is a beautiful gesture and can be done by even the busiest of people effortlessly. The gift you give each day need not be grand or attention-worthy because the broader benefits are the same no matter the literal repercussions. Once a day, you can affect reality, and you can reap the rewards of knowing that you are making the world a better place, day by day.

Clinging to the core

There are times when it seems that our whole world is falling apart around us, and we are not sure what to hold onto anymore. Sometimes it is our relationships that crumble and sometimes it’s our physical environment. At other times, we can’t really put our finger on it, but we feel as if all the walls have fallen down around us and we are standing with nothing to lean on, exposed and vulnerable. These are the times in our lives when we are given an opportunity to see where we have established our sense of identity, safety, and well-being. And while it is perfectly natural and part of our process to locate our sense of self in externals, any time those external factors shift, we have an opportunity to rediscover and move closer to our core, which is the only truly safe place to call home.

Photo by Monicaaaaa aaa on Pexels.com

The core of our being is not affected by the shifting winds of circumstance or subject to the cycles of change that govern physical reality. It is as steady and consistent as the sun, which is why the great mystics and mystical poets often reference the sun in their poems to the self. Like the sun, there are times when our core seems to be inaccessible to us, but this is just a misperception. We know that when the sun goes behind a cloud or sets for the night, it has not disappeared but is simply temporarily out of sight. In the same way, we can trust that our inner core is always shining brightly, even when we cannot quite see it.

We can cling to this core when things around us are falling apart, knowing that an inexhaustible light shines from within ourselves. Times of external darkness can be a great gift in that they provide an opportunity to remember this inner light that shines regardless of the circumstances of our lives. When our external lives begin to come back together, we are then able to lean a bit more lightly on the structures we used to call home, knowing more clearly than ever that our true home is that bright sun shining in our core.
