Don’t make resolutions at New Year

I think we have all done it. Made one or more New Year resolutions and then broken them within a few weeks. I believe the main reason for this is that we make the resolution at the wrong time and for the wrong reasons.

It is far more likely that if we make a promise to ourselves, when we are ready to do so, the promise will be kept.

For instance, it may be thaf you want to give up something – drinking, smoking, eating sweets, biting your nails – but you are not ready to do it on the 1st January. Making that resolution for the New Year puts a lot of pressure on you to succeed. But, you are not ready for this and you are making this promise to yourself because it is the New Year and it is expected to succeed. Although you really don’t want to do this, but have convinced yourself that you do.

Unfortunately, most New Year resolutions are broken within the first few weeks because there really is no effort put in and because we are not ready.

Now, if you decide in, say, June that you want to give up something, because you want to and because you are ready, you will be far more likely to succeed. There is much less pressure on you to succeed and you may well find it a lot easier to do.

Take care of yourself. Don’t put pressure on yourself. Make a positive change when you are ready and not because it is expected of you by yourself or others.

Stop dragging the weight of the past

When we hold onto regret it is like dragging the weight of the past with us.  We find that It drains our energy, leaving less available for life in the present because we are constantly feeding an old issue. This attachment can cause illness in the same way watering a dead plant creates decay. We know that something new and beautiful can grow in its place if we prepare the soil and plant the right seeds. We also know that we create our lives from our thoughts, so dwelling on the past may actually recreate a situation in our lives where we are forced to make that choice again and again. We can choose to move on right now by applying what we have learned to the present and perhaps even sharing with others, transforming the energy into something that is constructive and creative for ourselves and others.

We find that forgiveness is the soothing balm that can heal regret. When we sit quietly, we can imagine discussing the issue with the self of our past and offering our forgiveness for that choice. We can ask ourselves for forgiveness for being locked in that space of judgment for so long. We also may want to ask forgiveness from anyone else who may have been affected. By replaying the event in our minds, we can choose a new ending using all that we now know. Imagine that you have actually gone back into the past and made this change, and then say goodbye to it. Release your former self with a hug and bring forgiveness and love back with you to the present. Since we are usually our harshest critics, it is amazing how powerfully healing it can be to offer ourselves love.

Keeping our minds and our energy fully in the present allows us to fuel our physical and emotional healing and well-being today. This action frees our energy to create the dreams we dream for the future. By taking responsibility and action in the present, we can release our hold on the past.

Life can be very scary

For those of us who enjoy unexpected thrills, it’s frightening to suddenly find ourselves heading for a deep plunge as life can take us on a roller coaster ride full of highs and lows and twists and turns. Yet, it happens to all of us. At these moments, it is important to remember that you are not alone in your experiences. No matter how brave, strong, or level-headed we are, sometimes, we all get scared.

Photo by Aline Lira on Pexels.com

It might be that our fears revolve around our physical safety, particularly if we are not feeling well, living under difficult circumstances, or doing work that exposes us to hazardous conditions. Or, we may be experiencing financial woes that are causing us to be fearful about making ends meet. We may also fear the loss of a loved one who is sick, or we may be scared of never finding someone special to spend our life with. We may be scared to start at a new school, begin a different job, move to a new town, or meet new people. Whatever our fears are, they are valid, and we do not need to feel ashamed or embarrassed that we are, at times, afraid.

It may be reassuring to know that everyone gets scared, and it is perfectly OK. Sometimes just acknowledging our fears is enough to make us feel better. And while it sometimes takes a lot more to ease our mind, we can console ourselves with the knowledge that life can be scary at times. Giving ourselves permission to be scared lets us move through our fears so we can let it go. It also makes it alright to share our fears with others. Sharing our apprehensions with other people can make our fears less overwhelming because we are not letting them grow inside of us as pent up emotions. Sharing our fears also can lighten our burden because we are not carrying our worries all by ourselves. Remember that you are not alone.

Offerings of your day

When we have good days, we tend to go over the details later, enjoying them a second and third time as we feel the joy of our good fortune. When we have bad days, we tend to pore over the details of our misfortunes not enjoying them. However, we can reframe those bad days by spending some time before going to bed each night to review the gifts we received that day. Regardless of our evaluation of the day, good, bad, mediocre, we can recall the many blessings that were present. This practice transforms our consciousness as it reveals the fullness at the heart of our lives.

Some days it’s easy to recount the gifts we’ve received; on other days, we have to look harder for the offerings of the day, but once we do, we will find there are always quite a few. There is always something to be grateful for. We can keep it simple and be grateful for the fact that we have a roof over our head, nature, food, and our health. Once we have fully experienced these gifts, we can move outward to the gifts that may require a little more thought such as the gifts of forgiveness, tolerance and acceptance that we may have learned that day. We can also always be grateful for the people in our lives who support us, no matter how bad our day may have been.

Just reviewing the many positive offerings in our lives provides a context for our difficulties that puts them in proper perspective, but we can also make an effort to see the gifts even in adverse circumstances. This can be challenging and may require some practice before it feels authentic, but we have all had the experience of a disappointment or loss leading to a surprising gain. Just remembering this and trusting the give and take of life can help us to remember that sometimes the best gifts of all are the ones we don’t recognise right away. In addition, the lessons we learn in the face of adversity are offerings in their own right, allowing us to count patience, wisdom, and fortitude alongside our other gifts of the day.

The kaleidoscope of life

We tend to gravitate toward people who are most like us, usually in the ways that make us feel comfortable. But life has its way of bringing us into contact with people who challenge us with their differences. It may be an obvious difference reflected in their outward appearance or an invisible but powerful philosophical stance. Even in our closest circle of friends and family, though, there are those that confront us with their different ways of experiencing and expressing life. We can choose to resist, but we can also choose to learn from them and appreciate that they too have a place in the kaleidoscope of life.

As much as we may say that we want peace and quiet and a life without struggle, the truth is that human beings are currently thriving in a world of dualities and challenges. It is how we choose to approach these hurdles that determine if we sail over them, confirming our agility, or trip and end up flat on our faces. And each of us absolutely will and must stumble, and then get up, brush ourselves down, and carry on. This is how we learn and grow, developing depth of character and shades of understanding. In a world of dualities, we have trouble defining ourselves without something opposite and can’t discover who we are. Without challenge, there is nothing to do and nothing to discover. That leaves us either in a state of nonbeing or in the state of pure spirit, but as humans, we are spiritual beings experiencing the physical world in all of its startling contrast and beauty.

No matter how spiritual we are, our lives will have challenges. We will always run into people who are different from us, but the true challenge may be in finding ways to be at peace with this process. Rather than give in to the fight-or-flight response that comes from our animal nature, we can find new ways to evolve together into higher, more beautiful expressions of ourselves, realising, embracing, and celebrating the beauty of diversity and the strength it offers for the future.

Being ready to receive what you want

Very often we go through life with defences that we developed early on. These act as barriers or walls we needed at one time to feel safe but that now serve to shut out desired influences, like intimacy or love. In order to get what we want in life, we have to be willing to receive it when it appears, and in order to do that, we have to be open. An essential part of being ready to receive what we want is to soften these barriers enough to let those things in when they show up. For example, we may spend a lot of time alone as a way to protect ourselves from being hurt by other people, but this prevents us from meeting new friends.

Another obstacle to receiving can be our tendency to believe that we have to act aggressively in order to achieve our desired goal. These types of beliefs can give us tunnel vision, so we fail to see and be open to other opportunities. Becoming ready to receive often involves softening our defences and fostering a willingness to remain open to possibilities outside our immediate realm of vision.

If we are looking for love or friendship, it means first looking within ourselves to see where we are shut down and then, not getting too fixated on where we might find the love we want. In this way, we become more open as individuals and more expansive in terms of what we see as possible.

How to handle the split loyalties with friends when they separate

I think we have all had this dilemma.  Who do we stay friends with after a couple divorces or separates? Hopefully you can stay friends with both parties, but that can be difficult as we are often dealing with human emotions and judgemental attitudes. Realistically, the divorcing couple will expect you to commit to one side or the other and this often establishes itself way before the final separation or divorce. This is due to our blame culture – it’s always someone else’s fault – when actually there will be many circumstances that overlap and maybe many years later after a lot of reflective thought  we realise each partner was partly to blame for the failure of that relationship. How can you handle the initial expectation to now ignore one or other former partner? It can be really tough for friends of separating partners – which one do you invite to the family party –  can you invite both? – What will happen if they meet at the family wedding? – What will happen if each one brings a new partner?

Photo by RDNE Stock project on Pexels.com

All I can say is there is no set advice or guidance in the form of a one size fits all answer. However, common sense dictates procedures to adopt in order to ensure that your former couple remain friends long after the divorce or separation. Always try to balance being sympathetic and understanding to both friends without actually agreeing to any of their own conclusions regarding blame etc. – remember your only hearing one side of a very unbalanced perspective. Don’t reinforce any biased viewpoints – remain impartial. This will need exemplary diplomatic skills and can actually be both challenging and rewarding.

Make it clear you may still see or respond to each former partner from time to time for obvious and practical reasons. It needs to be made clear by way of simple inexplicit references with your normal conversations that this will happen. It ensures that you are not accused of being a ‘Judas’ and losing the confidence or friendship of either party when they find out that you have had contact with their former partner. Never, ever say to either party what you really thought of their former partner. Just remember that a high proportion of separating couples do actually end up getting back together again. There will of course be a whole host of anomalies that will occur that will need careful thoughtful planning on what your responses will be for each individual case of a divorcing couple. It won’t be easy. But trying to frame your responses within these guidance rules should ensure that your friendship is retained and remains flexible for most situations that may occur over the coming years.

Doing a good turn daily

For some reason it is believed that it is impossible to make a difference without unlimited funding or free time. Although most healing, cleansing, and spreading of joy is accomplished in a matter of minutes. Each of us is more than capable of helping the world, despite our fears and limitations and the uncertainty that holds us back. It is commonly accepted If we vow to make the world a better place one day at a time, the true significance of good deeds, however small, reveals itself to us. We come to see that we can be of service without dedicating our lives to recognised charities or giving up the pleasures we enjoy. The warmth we feel when we help the world is only a tiny part of the affirmative transformations that take place when we make altruism a part of everyday existence.

Photo by cottonbro studio on Pexels.com

We make our homes, workplaces, communities, and countries better and brighter when we think positive thoughts that echo outward, give donations of time or money, smile at everyone we meet, and lend to those in need of aid our assistance. As we learn, we inadvertently improve the universe because we can only be truly involved when we are informed. Even enthusiastically sharing ideas with others generates positive energy that then serves as the motivation for more tangible change. Selfless and helpful deeds remind us that we exercise some degree of control over a world that can seem chaotic at times. Even the smallest of deeds is a demonstration of the fact that we are capable of changing the world in a positive way. So much negative energy is generated by the suffering, pain, and close-mindedness we are regularly exposed to, but we can counteract it in a constructive way by thinking and acting altruistically when opportunities to do so arise.

Helping the world often takes no more than a moment, just a wish for the world is a beautiful gesture and can be done by even the busiest of people effortlessly. The gift you give each day need not be grand or attention-worthy because the broader benefits are the same no matter the literal repercussions. Once a day, you can affect reality, and you can reap the rewards of knowing that you are making the world a better place, day by day.

Clinging to the core

There are times when it seems that our whole world is falling apart around us, and we are not sure what to hold onto anymore. Sometimes it is our relationships that crumble and sometimes it’s our physical environment. At other times, we can’t really put our finger on it, but we feel as if all the walls have fallen down around us and we are standing with nothing to lean on, exposed and vulnerable. These are the times in our lives when we are given an opportunity to see where we have established our sense of identity, safety, and well-being. And while it is perfectly natural and part of our process to locate our sense of self in externals, any time those external factors shift, we have an opportunity to rediscover and move closer to our core, which is the only truly safe place to call home.

Photo by Monicaaaaa aaa on Pexels.com

The core of our being is not affected by the shifting winds of circumstance or subject to the cycles of change that govern physical reality. It is as steady and consistent as the sun, which is why the great mystics and mystical poets often reference the sun in their poems to the self. Like the sun, there are times when our core seems to be inaccessible to us, but this is just a misperception. We know that when the sun goes behind a cloud or sets for the night, it has not disappeared but is simply temporarily out of sight. In the same way, we can trust that our inner core is always shining brightly, even when we cannot quite see it.

We can cling to this core when things around us are falling apart, knowing that an inexhaustible light shines from within ourselves. Times of external darkness can be a great gift in that they provide an opportunity to remember this inner light that shines regardless of the circumstances of our lives. When our external lives begin to come back together, we are then able to lean a bit more lightly on the structures we used to call home, knowing more clearly than ever that our true home is that bright sun shining in our core.

Surrender jar

Our to-do lists, worries, plans, and dreams may be so crowded together in our heads that we don’t have room to think. There are times when our minds become too full. We may think that we are somehow taking care of our desires and concerns by keeping them at the forefront of our minds. In maintaining our mental hold on every detail, however, we may actually delay the realisation of our dreams and the resolution of our worries because we won’t let them go. At times like this, we may want to use a surrender jar.

A surrender jar allows us to let go of our worries and desires so the universe can take care of them for us. We write down what we want or need to happen and then place the note into a jar. By writing and placing our thoughts in the jar, we are taking action and letting the universe know we need help and are willing to surrender our feelings. We give ourselves permission to not concern ourselves with that problem any longer and trust that the universe is taking care of it. You may even want to decorate your jar and place it in a special place. Your surrender jar is a sacred container for your worries. Not only do you free up space in your mind by letting go of our worries and desires and dropping them into your surrender jar but you are giving your burden over to a higher power. Once we drop our worries and desires into the surrender jar, we free our minds so we can be fully present in each moment.

Surrendering our worries and concerns and placing them in the hands of the universe doesn’t mean that we’ve given up or have been defeated. Instead, we are releasing the realisation of our desires and the resolution of our worries and no longer concerning ourselves with their outcomes. It’s always fun to go back and pull the slips of paper out of the jar  once your requests have been granted. And it’s amazing how quickly problems go away and dreams come true when we finally let go and allow a higher power to help us.
