The ripple effect

Each of us carries within us the capacity to change the world in small ways for better or worse. But it’s easy to believe that the only way to initiate profound transformation is to take extreme action in a world inhabited by six billion people. Everything we think and do affects the people in our lives, and in turn their reactions affect others. As the effect of a seemingly insignificant word passes from person to person, its impact grows and can become a source of great joy, inspiration, anxiety, or pain. Our thoughts and actions are like stones dropped into still waters, causing ripples to spread and expand as they move outward. The impact we have on the world is greater than we could ever imagine, and the choices we make can have far-reaching consequences. We can use the ripple effect to make a positive difference and spread waves of kindness that will wash over the world.

Hopefully the recipient of a good deed will likely feel compelled to do a good deed for someone else should the opportunity arise. Someone feeling the effects of negative energy will be more likely to pass on that negative energy. One act of charity, one thoughtful deed, or even one positive thought can pass from individual to individual, snowballing until it becomes a group movement or the ray of hope that saves someone’s life. Every transformation, just like every ripple, has a point of origin. We must believe in our ability to be that point of origin if we want to use the ripples we create to spread goodness. Consider the effect of our thoughts and actions, and try to act graciously as much as possible.

A smile directed at a stranger, a compliment given to a friend, an attitude of laughter, or a thoughtful gesture can send ripples that spread among our loved ones and associates, out into your community, and finally throughout the world. We have the power to touch the lives of everyone we come into contact with and everyone those people come into contact with. The momentum of our influences will grow as our ripples move onward and outward. One of those ripples could become a tidal wave of positivity.

Many people don’t realise the importance of securing a qualified, experienced and expert coach to help rebuild their confidence in themselves. It is just as important as a mechanic for a garage or a chef for a restaurant.

When I am asked “. . and what is it you do?” I find it difficult to find a straightforward answer. Through my work I will help you to repair your feelings of weakness, brokenness, unworthiness, ‘unlovedness’, not ‘enoughness’.  Help you heal your inner wounded childhood pain. I will help you reclaim your power, build boundaries, release guilt when you need to energise and nurture yourself.

I take responsibility for my choices, and encourage others to take responsibility for their choices. There are always choices to be made. My clients get the results they want.

My ‘WHY’ is so much bigger than all the reasons for ‘why not’.

Simplifying your schedule

We all need regular periods of downtime so we can be healthy and happy. But for many of us life is full of never-ending commitments. Whilst there is nothing wrong with being busy, if we over commit or over extend ourselves we could potentially face exhaustion and burnout.  It is important to examine our motivation for taking on many obligations that find us overwhelmed to discover why we feel compelled to do so much. Sometimes we are driven by fear that no one else will do the job or guilt that we aren’t doing enough. To regain our equilibrium and clear the clutter from our calendar, we must simplify our lives by establishing limits regarding what we will and what we won’t do based on our personal priorities.

To determine where your priorities lie can be as easy as making two lists: one that outlines all those obligations that are vital to your wellbeing, such as work, meditation, and exercise, and another that describes everything you do that is not directly related to your wellbeing. Although there will likely be items in the latter list that excite your passion or bring you joy, you may discover that you devote a large portion of your time to unnecessary activities. To simplify your schedule, consider which of these unnecessary activities add little value to your life and edit them from your agenda. Remember that you may need to ask for help, say no firmly, or delegate responsibility in order to distance yourself from such activities. However, as you remove non-vital obligations that cause you stress, serve no purpose, or rob you of opportunities to refresh yourself, you will feel more energetic and enthusiastic about life in general.

If simplifying your schedule seems prohibitively difficult and you still feel pressed to take on more, try imagining how each new commitment will impact your life before saying yes. When you consider the hassle associated with superfluous obligations, you may be surprised to see that your schedule is impeding your attempts to grow as an individual. Your willingness to pare down your agenda, no matter how gradual your progress, will empower you to retake active control of the life that defines you.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch. hello@maggiecurrie.co.uk. Work with me, improve your confidence and see how much more you can achieve.

Are you holding on to things you ‘Should’ do?

A lot of people carry around with them a large amount of “baggage” or “clutter” in their minds. They are still holding onto things that they say they ‘should’ do, but they really don’t need to. Those ‘coulds’ and ‘shoulds’ in your life that hold you back – you want to let go, but you don’t.

An example is worrying about whether you ‘should’ have bought that handbag you liked even though you couldn’t afford it. Worrying about it and continuing to carry around that clutter doesn’t do anyone any good. Are you carrying around with you a lot of emotional attention that you really could be doing without instead of focusing on something more productive? Are you like this? If you are, I bet it has a negative influence on your confidence and self esteem.

Take a look at your life and get rid of this baggage by asking yourself some questions and by completing the following exercise. In effect, what you are doing is making certain tasks “complete”, drawing a line under them and moving on. The following questions can be taken at one sitting or over a number of hours/days. By writing the answers down they become more formal. Get to it and watch your confidence soar!

• Make a list of 10 things that you are putting up with at home

• Make a list of 10 things that you are putting up with at work

• Make a list of 10 things that you are putting up with in any other areas of your life

Are you surprised at what you are putting up with in your life?

Make an action plan to get rid of these things that you have been putting up with. Or communicate to someone who can stop what you are putting up with. Take action!

• Make a list of things that are unresolved/unfinished in your life.

Make an action plan of how to reduce this number! Take action!

• Do you need to clear the air with anyone? If so, just do it! Life is too short!

• Did you ever say that you were going to call someone or keep in touch with someone yet have done nothing about it? If yes, call them or send an email to them today. Take action!

Let go of as many coulds, woulds, shoulds, maybes, oughts as you can. Take action!

By completing these exercises you will be able to focus more on the here, the now and the future. You will now be able to let go of some of the things that have been taking up your valuable attention units – those things that knock your self esteem.

If, however, you prefer to remain stuck and miserable take no action.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch. hello@maggiecurrie.co.uk. Work with me, improve your confidence and see how much more you can achieve.

Being confident in social situations

If you’ve ever been to a social gathering where you’ve felt awkward and uncomfortable, it is very probable you are not alone. While social gatherings can be very enjoyable, especially when we are surrounded by people whose company we enjoy, there are social events that we attend where we sometimes find ourselves wishing we were somewhere else. Such occasions can be the cause of much anxiety and self-consciousness. We may even feel like everyone else is having a good time except for us. Yet the truth is that everyone has felt shy and awkward on occasion. One of the best ways to overcome self-consciousness or get past your feelings of shyness at social gatherings is to focus on the people around you. If you can remember that other people might also be feeling awkward or shy, you might find the thought of speaking to them less intimidating or overwhelming.

The next time there is a social event you feel nervous about attending, you may want to try this exercise: Spend some time with your eyes closed and breathe deeply. When you feel ready, create your own comfort zone by visualising yourself surrounded in a warm white light that is protective yet accepting of others. Imagine people at the event being drawn to you because of the open and warm feelings that you are radiating. When you arrive at the event, take a moment to spread this same light of loving acceptance to everyone around you. Smile and greet people warmly. Try going up to someone who is standing alone and introduce yourself. When you radiate acceptance, openness, and receptiveness, people can’t help but respond to you in kind.

Focusing on how we can make other people at a social gathering feel at ease can help us forget about our own insecurities. In the process, we end up making the very connections that we seek. The next time you attend a social gathering, invite people to join you in your comfort zone that you have so lovingly and intentionally created. Let yourself enjoy being encircled in the warmth of their friendships.

Editing your life

Our lives could be compared to an ongoing film script over which we have complete creative control. Within us lies the power to examine what works or isn’t working in our lives and make “edits” to our life’s script, accordingly. Choosing to actively edit your life can be incredibly empowering. As you evolve, you have the choice to accept the script you’ve written thus far or edit it so you can create a life that fulfils you. You can cut out from your life’s script what is no longer working for you. Acknowledging that you are responsible for the experience you create gives you the ability to create the life you’ve always longed for.

Granted, editing your real life isn’t always as easy as crossing out a line of text. If you’ve carried emotional baggage or held on to an unhealthy relationship for a long time, these may be difficult to edit out. But when you do cut out what isn’t working from your life, you’ll feel lighter and more alive. Editing out activities that you find stressful, disassociating yourself from people that drain your energy, and letting go of your emotional baggage are all beneficial cuts you can make. In the empty spaces that are left behind, you can add in anything you like. Just as you have the power to edit out negative situations or beliefs that you no longer wish to have as part of your life, you can now include the kinds of positive experiences, people, and beliefs that you would like to fill your life with. The manifestation of these thoughts and images as realities in your life will inevitably follow. As you make changes to your life, you can also add in the bits where you choose more intimate, healthier relationships, seek out adventure over tedium, and are no longer negatively impacted by old experiences.

To begin editing your life, simply think about your positive and negative experiences. When you determine what parts of your life are no longer serving you, make the commitment to remove them – though, it is important to remember that there is no proper timing or way to do this, and patience and compassion for yourself are always important during this process. Then, ask yourself what has brought you profound enjoyment and consider how you can make those experiences and beliefs part of your life now. With a little editing, you’ll be able to clear out what is no longer serving you and make room in your life for more happiness, love, and wisdom.

We can help the world every day

Despite our fears and limitations and the uncertainty that holds us back each of us is more than capable of helping the world. We often think it is impossible to make a difference without unlimited funding or free time, yet most healing, cleansing, and spreading of joy is accomplished in a matter of minutes. If we really want to make the world a better place one day at a time, the true significance of small good deeds reveals itself to us. We come to see that we can be of service without dedicating our lives to recognised charities or giving up the pleasures we enjoy. The warmth we feel when we help the world is only a tiny part of the affirmative transformations that take place when we make altruism a part of everyday existence.

When we think positive thoughts that echo outward, we make our homes, workplaces, communities, and countries better and brighter, give donations of time or money, smile at everyone we meet, and lend those in need of aid our assistance. As we learn, we inadvertently improve the universe because we can only be truly involved when we are informed. Even enthusiastically sharing ideas with others generates positive energy that then serves as the motivation for more tangible change. Selfless and helpful deeds remind us that we exercise some degree of control over a world that can seem chaotic at times. Even the smallest of such deeds is a demonstration of the fact that we are capable of changing the world in a positive way. Huge amounts of negative energy are generated by the suffering, pain, and close-mindedness we are regularly exposed to, but we can counteract it in a constructive way by thinking and acting altruistically when opportunities to do so arise.

Helping the world often takes no more than a moment, just a wish for the world is a beautiful gesture and can be done by even the busiest of people effortlessly. The gift you give each day need not be grand or attention-worthy because the broader benefits are the same no matter the literal repercussions. Once a day, you can affect reality, and you can reap the rewards of knowing that you are making the world a better place, day by day.

Create your supportive life story

Your life is filled with relationships and events which help shape who you are and affect what you believe to be true about your life and the world in general.  Everyone has their own life story. Depending on your perspective and your willingness or not to grow, your experiences can become fodder for negativity and possible patterns for playing the victim.  Alternatively they can fuel your life with empowerment and continued self-development.  It is the story you tell yourself about what happens that makes all the difference.

Take a moment to look at the life story you are creating for yourself on an ongoing basis. If you are feeling peaceful about the past and trust in your ability to handle whatever comes your way, then you are framing circumstances in a manner that serves you well. On the other hand, if you retain a lot of guilt or resentment and often feel weighed down by life, you may want to change your perspective of the versions of past and present events. No matter who the characters are in your story or what they have done, you are the only one who can give their actions the meaning they will have for you. You are the only one who can define what role you will play in your own life. By taking responsibility for your story, you are able to learn and grow, forgive and find compassion, and most importantly, move on into a brighter future.

From now on, choose a life story that supports you. Let it be proof of your own resilience and creativity. Be kind with the roles you give yourself and generous with how many chances you get to learn what you need to know. When you remember that you are the author of your own story, you are free to create a masterpiece.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch.

Links that Last

It is a modern occurrence in our lifestyles that often isolates us from one another, it can be difficult to forge meaningful connections. Self-protection and mistrust prevent us from reaching out to neighbours and peers, and we consequently feel like we don’t truly belong anywhere. Yet creating community can be as simple as reaching out within our own neighbourhoods. We can find there are walls of suspicion and doubt which can divide us. But when we create a community we find we are willing to rise above those walls and those doubts and help us befriend the individuals who inhabit our neighbourhood or road. We are taught from childhood to fear those we do not know, but community is as much a part of survival as safety. When we take a proactive approach, we can harmoniously unite our neighbours and build a network of support that contributes to the well-being of all involved.

Your actions in the community needn’t be complicated. If you are new to your area, sending letters of introduction to your closest neighbours can ensure that their curiosity about you is partly satisfied. Consider telling them a bit about yourself and how you plan to positively contribute to your locale, even if it is something as straightforward as planting attractive flowers in your window boxes. Or if others have recently moved in nearby, schedule some time to welcome them to the area. By doing so, you can calm any misgivings they have while demonstrating that your neighbourhood is a nice place to live. It is much easier to meet people while outdoors, so try to take frequent strolls or sit outside. Say hello to people who pass by, and you will likely get to know your neighbours speedily. And one of the easiest ways to build a sense of community is to help organise local projects and events that bring people together in service or in fun!

Even if you have little in common with your neighbours, your proximity to one another can offer a wonderful opportunity to pursue new friendships and working relationships. You may not see eye to eye on everything, but each of you understands that community helps people feel connected. As you grow to know and then to like one another, the city or town where you reside will truly become your home.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch.

Offering our gifts

We all know that it is easy to get caught up in our personal lives and forget that we have an obligation to be responsible members of our communities. For some of us, expressing this responsibility is so interwoven into our personal lives that it is simply a natural extension of who we are. Others may need to take a moment to consider how to be more responsible for the communities in which we live. For those who live in large cities, they can start with their neighbourhoods. Anything done on a small level will automatically ripple out into the larger system.

Communities thrive on the talents of their members, so one approach to community responsibility is to consider what you have to offer and find ways to bring that into your community. If you have a special gift when it comes to bringing people together, you might agree to throw an event once a year that includes the whole community. Even a small open house or garden can accomplish a lot in terms of making people feel more connected and comfortable with each other. If you have a talent for gardening, you might offer to help people in your community plan their own gardens. You might be the go to person for neighbours who need someone to water their plants or care for their pets when they’re away. You might take an abandoned space in your community and encourage others to help you transform it into a community garden or a playground for children. In an area where there are many homeless people, starting a soup kitchen or organising a meal makes a big difference not only to those in need but to those who want to help.

All parades, picnics, and ceremonies started somewhere, with someone who wanted to give back to the community in which they lived. It’s not too late to propose and execute a new tradition in your own community, whether it’s a street party or an annual picnic. Your particular vision, gifts, and strengths are part of what makes your community unique, so as you recognise them in yourself, feel free to offer them to those who live in your vicinity. Whether your offerings are visionary or practical, they are the very essence of community.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch. I want to work with you so you have more freedom, more fun, less stress.

Clearing Your Mind

During a day we are bombarded with words, images, stories, songs and a whole host of stimuli from any number of sources and they continue to play in our heads for hours. Especially as we lie in bed, in the quiet dark, our minds continue noisily processing all the input from our day. This can leave us feeling unsettled and harassed. It also makes it difficult to take in any new information or inspiration. Like a cluttered house that needs to be cleared if it is to have room for movement and new life, our minds need clearing if they are to be open to new information, ideas, and inspiration.

Frequently, the activities we choose to help us relax only add to the clutter. Watching television, seeing a film, reading a book, or talking to a friend all involve taking in more information. In order to really clear our minds, we need a break from mental stimulation. Activities like yoga, dancing, or taking a long walk help to draw our attention to our bodies, slowing our mental activity enough that our minds begin to settle. Deep breathing is an even simpler way to draw attention away from our mental activities. Once we are mentally relaxed, we can begin the process of clearing our minds. Most of us instinctively know what allows our minds to relax and release any unnecessary clutter. It may be meditation or time spent staring at the stars. Whatever it is, these exercises feel like a cool, cleansing bath for the brain and leave our minds feeling clear and open.

Setting aside time to clear our minds once a day creates a habit that becomes second nature over time. Our minds will begin to settle with less effort the more we practice. Ultimately, the practice of clearing our minds allows us to be increasingly more open so that we can perceive the world as the fresh offering it is, free of yesterday’s mental clutter.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch. I want to work with you so you have more freedom, more fun, less stress.
