We can help the world every day

Despite our fears and limitations and the uncertainty that holds us back each of us is more than capable of helping the world. We often think it is impossible to make a difference without unlimited funding or free time, yet most healing, cleansing, and spreading of joy is accomplished in a matter of minutes. If we really want to make the world a better place one day at a time, the true significance of small good deeds reveals itself to us. We come to see that we can be of service without dedicating our lives to recognised charities or giving up the pleasures we enjoy. The warmth we feel when we help the world is only a tiny part of the affirmative transformations that take place when we make altruism a part of everyday existence.

When we think positive thoughts that echo outward, we make our homes, workplaces, communities, and countries better and brighter, give donations of time or money, smile at everyone we meet, and lend those in need of aid our assistance. As we learn, we inadvertently improve the universe because we can only be truly involved when we are informed. Even enthusiastically sharing ideas with others generates positive energy that then serves as the motivation for more tangible change. Selfless and helpful deeds remind us that we exercise some degree of control over a world that can seem chaotic at times. Even the smallest of such deeds is a demonstration of the fact that we are capable of changing the world in a positive way. Huge amounts of negative energy are generated by the suffering, pain, and close-mindedness we are regularly exposed to, but we can counteract it in a constructive way by thinking and acting altruistically when opportunities to do so arise.

Helping the world often takes no more than a moment, just a wish for the world is a beautiful gesture and can be done by even the busiest of people effortlessly. The gift you give each day need not be grand or attention-worthy because the broader benefits are the same no matter the literal repercussions. Once a day, you can affect reality, and you can reap the rewards of knowing that you are making the world a better place, day by day.

Know Your Food

Food provides us with the energy that enables us to grow and prosper. The food we eat is a multidimensional aspect of our lives. Yet it can be, and frequently is, much, much more. Our food can be an experience in and of itself if we allow it to be. The meals we remember from childhood can offer unmatched comfort or memories of horror. The act of preparing meals can be an art form of the highest calibre. And the nourishment we derive from this fare promotes wellness within us. But many of us, distracted by daily life, forget that the profound pleasures of eating go beyond simple sustenance. We eat foods that are convenient or we eat unconsciously, snacking on whatever happens to be on hand. To understand the true value of food and the impact it can have on our lives, we should acknowledge and honour it by eating close to the earth.

If you have ever shelled and eaten your own garden-grown peas or bitten into a sun-warmed apple freshly plucked from its tree, you likely understand that there is a marked difference between these foods and those that are processed and stacked on supermarket shelves. Food recently picked contains more of its original life force and thus has a greater store of energy and nutrients. You can ensure you are eating close to the earth and enjoying the many benefits of doing so by shopping at a local farmers market, or your local greengrocer and getting to know the individuals who grow your food. If you make the experience of shopping in this way enjoyable, you will probably be more ready to reject more convenient canned, packaged, and frozen foods in favour of the real delight you feel while browsing stalls of fresh foods nourished by the same soil you can find in your own garden. You will soon learn which foods are in season in your area and how to prepare them.

As you savour the vivid flavours of juicy ripe fruits and the hearty crunch of unprocessed vegetables, you can also take pleasure in the fact that, by eating close to the earth, you are supporting farmers in your local area, connecting with your local ecosystem, discouraging those who would waste precious fossil fuels by carting produce cross-country, and helping to preserve healthy culinary traditions that have existed for centuries.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch.

Trusting your gut instinct

Gut feelings (intuition, inner wisdom, inner child, higher self) get their name from the place in the body where they make themselves known.  A pang in your gut when you may be doing the wrong thing, or a vibrant zing when your body approves of what you are doing, can guide you reliably at times when logic fails. Sometimes, when logic, or our ego, takes over, we ignore our gut, we override the built in system,  and probably live to regret it.  We discover later that a rational approach is only one way of determining what is going on in a situation and how we should react.
So where do the gut feelings come from within our physical bodies?  Our gut resides in the solar plexus just above the belly button. When it is functioning well, we can trust its guidance and adjust our actions accordingly.

Interestingly,  many of us have a tendency to ignore this area of our bodies.  We tend to take shallow breaths that never have the opportunity to reach this part of our bodies.  But it is in this place that we find the courage to act, to reach out into the world and to create change.  It is a place in our bodies that must not be ignored. When our gut is out of balance, we are timid and out of sync, wishing we had been able to say something or to stand up for ourselves.  Often we were only able to say what we wanted to say later when we were alone; telling the mirror how upset we are and wishing we had acted on the opportunity we hadn’t seen until it was gone.  Our gut had seen it, but we had ignored that feeling to our detriment. In order to get the most out of your gut feelings, make a definite effort to focus your attention on it more regularly and make the time to care for it. Notice what it is telling you, whether it is saying ‘this doesn’t feel right’ or ‘this feels good’ or ‘Don’t do it’.

You can begin right now to focus your attention on your gut by taking a deep breath right down into your belly.  Feel that part of your body just above the belly button expand with the inhaled breath.  Notice how it feels. When you exhale, pull your navel in toward your spine so as to empty out all the breath completely before taking another deep breath right down into your belly.  When you empty completely, you release any stagnant energy and create more space to be filled with another fresh, nourishing breath.  The more you practice this simple, cleansing exercise, the clearer and more communicative your gut feelings will be and the more comfortable you will feel acting on them. Try it.  When you next get a feeling in your gut about something, take notice.  What is it telling you?

It will take a little time to get used to the feelings you experience.  But you will soon learn how it works. Learn to trust your gut instinct.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch.

Releasing the reins

To a large extent our perceptions of humanity are dualistic.  We tend to paint people with a broad brush, some are like us, sharing our opinions and our attitudes, while others are different. Our commitment to the values we have chosen is often so strong that we are easily convinced that our way is the right way. Sometimes we may find ourselves frustrated by those who view the world differently and make use of unusual strategies when coping with life’s challenges. However ardently we believe that these people would be happier and more satisfied following our lead, we must resist the temptation to try to change them. Every human being has been blessed with a unique nature that cannot be altered by outside forces. We are who we are at any one point in our lives for a reason, and no one person can say for certain what another should be like.

The reasons we try to change one another are numerous. Since we have learned over time to flourish in the richness of lives we have built, we may come to believe that we are qualified to speak on behalf of the greater source. The sum total of our knowledge will never compare to what we do not know, however, and our understanding of others’ lives will forever be limited. The potential we see in other people who are a part of our lives will never be exactly the same as our own, so we do these individuals a disservice when we make assumptions about their intentions, preferences, and goals. Our power lies in our ability to accept others for all their quirks and differences and to let go of the need to control every element of our existence. We can love people for who they are, embracing their uniqueness, or we can love them as human beings from afar.

Your ability to influence people may grow more sophisticated because others sense that you respect their right to be themselves, but you will likely spend more time gazing inward, into the one person you can change: yourself.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch.

Create your supportive life story

Your life is filled with relationships and events which help shape who you are and affect what you believe to be true about your life and the world in general.  Everyone has their own life story. Depending on your perspective and your willingness or not to grow, your experiences can become fodder for negativity and possible patterns for playing the victim.  Alternatively they can fuel your life with empowerment and continued self-development.  It is the story you tell yourself about what happens that makes all the difference.

Take a moment to look at the life story you are creating for yourself on an ongoing basis. If you are feeling peaceful about the past and trust in your ability to handle whatever comes your way, then you are framing circumstances in a manner that serves you well. On the other hand, if you retain a lot of guilt or resentment and often feel weighed down by life, you may want to change your perspective of the versions of past and present events. No matter who the characters are in your story or what they have done, you are the only one who can give their actions the meaning they will have for you. You are the only one who can define what role you will play in your own life. By taking responsibility for your story, you are able to learn and grow, forgive and find compassion, and most importantly, move on into a brighter future.

From now on, choose a life story that supports you. Let it be proof of your own resilience and creativity. Be kind with the roles you give yourself and generous with how many chances you get to learn what you need to know. When you remember that you are the author of your own story, you are free to create a masterpiece.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch.

Links that Last

It is a modern occurrence in our lifestyles that often isolates us from one another, it can be difficult to forge meaningful connections. Self-protection and mistrust prevent us from reaching out to neighbours and peers, and we consequently feel like we don’t truly belong anywhere. Yet creating community can be as simple as reaching out within our own neighbourhoods. We can find there are walls of suspicion and doubt which can divide us. But when we create a community we find we are willing to rise above those walls and those doubts and help us befriend the individuals who inhabit our neighbourhood or road. We are taught from childhood to fear those we do not know, but community is as much a part of survival as safety. When we take a proactive approach, we can harmoniously unite our neighbours and build a network of support that contributes to the well-being of all involved.

Your actions in the community needn’t be complicated. If you are new to your area, sending letters of introduction to your closest neighbours can ensure that their curiosity about you is partly satisfied. Consider telling them a bit about yourself and how you plan to positively contribute to your locale, even if it is something as straightforward as planting attractive flowers in your window boxes. Or if others have recently moved in nearby, schedule some time to welcome them to the area. By doing so, you can calm any misgivings they have while demonstrating that your neighbourhood is a nice place to live. It is much easier to meet people while outdoors, so try to take frequent strolls or sit outside. Say hello to people who pass by, and you will likely get to know your neighbours speedily. And one of the easiest ways to build a sense of community is to help organise local projects and events that bring people together in service or in fun!

Even if you have little in common with your neighbours, your proximity to one another can offer a wonderful opportunity to pursue new friendships and working relationships. You may not see eye to eye on everything, but each of you understands that community helps people feel connected. As you grow to know and then to like one another, the city or town where you reside will truly become your home.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch.

Go hug a tree

You may not be aware that trees are among the world’s greatest givers. They provide the world with clean air, their roots filter water, and their majestically spreading branches provide shade through their slow and gentle life cycles. Full of vibrant, natural energy, trees can also give us the gifts of peace and nurturance. You will find that hugging a tree or sitting with your spine against the trunk of any tree can ground your body and inspire a profound closeness with nature as the energy of the tree connects to you. Making physical contact with a tree can help you relax, alleviate stress, sleep more deeply, and hold on to more positive energy. Trees can absorb great amounts of energy and have the ability to soak up harmful energy from deep within you. If you are feeling anxious, sad, drained, or tense, then try going to hug a tree.

Take a trip to the woods, or a garden, or a park, and find the tree that you would like to hug. Stand next to that tree and close your eyes. Relax your senses while breathing in the scent of leaves and bark. Listen to the creaking of the branches. When you feel settled, open your eyes, keeping them unfocused, and walk around its trunk. Feel the unique energy of the tree as your auras meet each other. Ask the tree for permission to touch it. If you feel the tree saying yes to you, begin breathing in its energy. Put your arms around the trunk and press your face to its bark. Embrace the tree for as long as you wish, feeling the roughness of its wood and the strength of its years. Relax into that strength and let the tree support you. You may even be able to physically feel a cyclical flow of energy taking place between your body and the tree.

You can sit with your back pressed to the tree for the same effect if you feel more comfortable doing so. Likewise, if you are seeking greater comfort, you may want to wrap your legs and arms around the tree, either at the base or by straddling a branch. Remember to thank the tree because by hugging your tree you are drinking from the well of natural copious energy cultivated by the tree’s many years on this earth.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch. I want to work with you so you have more freedom, more fun, less stress.

Whatever we believe becomes our reality.

We tend to ignore information that we think is inconsistent with our reality. Successful people absolutely believe that they have the ability to succeed. They do not think or talk about the possibilities of failing. They do not even consider the possibility of failure. We usually act in a manner consistent with our beliefs. The most important belief system we can build is one where we absolutely believe that we are going succeed. This is called positive thinking, confirming our reality that we absolutely know that no matter what, we will be successful.

Often positive thinking is difficult because our parents or guardians only gave love and approval to their children when they did something that they wanted them to do.  If we grew up with this kind of conditional love we will inevitably tend to seek unconditional approval from others.  When we become adults, this need for approval from the parent is transferred to the workplace and to our boss or workmates. We can become preoccupied with the opinion of the boss and some totally imagined high standard. If we can change the way we think about ourselves and our potential, we can open new doors to unlimited possibilities and point ourselves in the right direction to a better, more fulfilling professional and personal life.  We should not think about what other people think of us, but we should concentrate on what we want and adjust our thinking so that we will achieve it.

To begin to change the way we think about ourselves, we need to stimulate our imaginations.  This can be done by writing down a clear and detailed description of our ideal outcome.  We must be absolutely clear about the outcome, but we must also be flexible about the process of achieving it.

There is a method you can use to see yourself having achieved your outcome.  It is called the ‘Hindsight Tool’.  It works like this:

  • Think about the outcome you want, visualise yourself as having achieved it.
  • In your mind imagine yourself in, say, five years time, picture yourself being the successful person you want to be. How would you look? What would you be wearing? What would you be saying or doing?  Who would be around you, who wouldn’t be around you?
  • Then use the ‘hindsight tool’  –  turn round and look back to the present and see what course and actions you took, what mistakes you may have made and how you corrected them.

It may be that the outcome you imagined is not exactly what you hoped for.  That is fine and very normal.  Re-think your outcome and do the process over again.  You can do this many times until you get the outcome you want.  Then put it all into practice.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch.

Those first minutes of your day

Those first minutes of the day when you open your eyes and come into consciousness is an opportunity to cherish. Those first minutes set the tone for everything that comes after them, a bit like the opening scene in a film or the first chapter of a novel. In those minutes, your ability to create the day is at its most powerful, and you can offer yourself fully to this creative process by filling these minutes with whatever inspires you most. Perhaps you want to be more generous, or it may be that you want to be more open to beauty in your daily life. Whatever the case, if you bring this vision into your mind at this very fertile minute, you empower it to be the guiding principle of your day.

It is possible to wake up with a mood already seemingly in place, and it’s important to give this feeling its due. It can inform us and deepen our awareness to what’s going on inside us, as well as around us. As long as we are conscious, we can honour this feeling and also introduce our new affirmation or vision, our conscious offering to the day. We may want to decide before we go to sleep what we want to bring to the next day of our lives. It could be that we simply want to be more open to whatever comes our way. Or we may want to summon a particular quality such as confidence. Perhaps we may simply call up a feeling that perfectly captures how we want our day to be.

We can repeat our vision or affirmation as we shower and eat breakfast, as well as recalling it at various times throughout the day. We can write it down and carry it with us on a little slip of paper if this helps. Simply by being aware of those first minutes, we set the stage for a more conscious, enlivened experience, and we become active participants in the creation of our lives.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch.

Feeling Depleted

Sometimes it seems our bodies are running on empty. We are not sick, nor are we necessarily pushing ourselves to the limit but it seems the energy we typically have has mysteriously dissipated, leaving only fatigue. Many people become accustomed to feeling this way because they do not know that it is possible to exist in any other state. The body’s natural state, however, is one of energy, clarity, and balance. Cultivating these virtues in our own bodies so that we can combat feelings of depletion is a matter of developing a refined awareness of ourselves and then making changes based on our observations.

Take a couple of moments of focused self-examination, assess your recent schedule, diet, and general health which will help you zero in on the factors causing your depletion. If you are struggling to cope with an overfull agenda, prioritising what is really important can provide you with more time to sleep and otherwise refresh yourself. Changing your eating habits so you eat plenty of nutritious foods may serve to restore your vigour. Identifying the source of your exhaustion will occasionally be more complicated than spotting a void in your lifestyle and filling it with some form of literal nourishment. Since your earthly and ethereal forms are so intimately entwined, matters of the mind and heart can take their toll on your physical self. Intense emotions such as anger, sadness, jealousy, and regret need fuel to manifest in your consciousness, and this fuel is more often than not corporeal energy. Conversely, a lack of mental and emotional stimulation may leave you feeling listless and lethargic.

When you can accept that the underlying cause of depletion might be more complex than you at first imagined, coping with the physical depletion and healing will be easier.  A harried lifestyle or a diet low in vital nutrients can represent only one part of a larger issue affecting your mood, stamina, and energy levels. When you believe that you are ultimately in control of how you feel, you will be empowered to transform yourself and your day-to-day life so that lasting fatigue can no longer gain a foothold in your existence.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch.
