Baby steps to big change

It is usually best to ease into a big change by starting small.  By making small changes with baby steps we allow ourselves to grow into a new habit and make it a permanent part of our lives. Making a sudden change may set us up to fail and that will make it difficult to go on, and we will be more likely to revert to our old ways. But don’t despair, even if we have made a sudden change and find ourselves contemplating the choice to start over again, we can decide to take it slowly this time, and move forward.

The goals we set for ourselves are indicators of the need for change and are very useful in getting us moving in the right direction. However, it is possible that once we try out what we thought was ideal, we may find that it doesn’t actually suit us, or make us feel the way we had hoped.  By taking baby steps we have the chance to look around and consider other options as we learn and grow.  We have time to examine the underlying values of the desire for change and find ways to manifest those feelings, whether it looks exactly like our initial goal or not. Taking baby steps forward gives us time to adjust and find secure footing on our new path.

Often life doesn’t give us the opportunity to anticipate or prepare for a big change, and we may find ourselves overwhelmed by what is in front of us. By choosing one thing to work on at a time, we focus our attention on something manageable, and eventually we will look up to see that we have accomplished quite a bit. Forcing change is, in essence, a sign that we do not trust the universe’s wisdom. Instead, we can listen to our inner guidance and make changes at a pace that is right for us, ensuring that we do so in alignment with the rhythm of the universe.

Give yourself permission to simply be

The elation that we feel when we have learned an important lesson, achieved a goal, or had a big breakthrough can sometimes be met with a period of downtime afterward. During this time of transition, we may feel unsure and not know where to turn next. I know that during this period of downtime, we can begin to wonder what our life is about, what our purpose is. These feelings are very common and we all feel them from time to time.

Often, we feel best when we are working on a project or vigorously pursuing a goal. But there is nothing inherently wrong with spending a day, a week or even a month, simply existing and not having a plan. Just being. I know that I have found sometimes the quiet lull between ideas, projects, and goals can make life appear empty. I know there are some people who, after accomplishing one objective, want to move immediately on to the next. However, we are all different.  When you find that your next step is unclear, it is quite natural to feel frustrated, or disconnected or even a mild depression.

To help calm what can be distressing thoughts, learn to accept that you will continue to grow as an individual whether you are striving for a specific objective or not. Just be and use all the time you need to think about what you have recently gone through and leisurely contemplate what you wish to do next. You may also find that in simply being and going through the motions of everyday life, you reconnect with your priorities in a very organic, unforced way. I have found that this transition time is different all the time. It can be a period of reflection or a period of adjustment where new values based on recent changes can be integrated. Just because you have temporarily lost sight of a final destination, doesn’t mean you should assume that you have lost your drive. Where you are going next will become apparent at the right time for you.

Finding the gift in a bad day

We have all had days when we are convinced the world is against us or that the chaos we are currently experiencing will never end. Each negative circumstance seems to lead to another, and another and so on. You may wonder, as we all have on a bad day, whether anything in your life will ever go right again. But a bad day, like any other day, can be a gift. Having a bad day can show you, if you choose to notice, that it is time to slow down, change course or simply lighten up. A bad day can help you gain wisdom you might otherwise have overlooked or discounted.

Bad days can certainly cause you to experience some uncomfortable feelings you would really prefer to avoid. That same bad day may also give you a potent means to learn more about yourself.
You may think that a bad day is one where you have missed an ‘important’ meeting because your car broke down or the washing machine broke or you received a piece of very bad news earlier in the day. Several misfortunes that take place, one after the other, can leave us feeling vulnerable and intensely aware of our fragility.

Although it is good to remember that bad days can only have a long-term negative effect on us if we allow them to. It is a good idea to ask yourself what you can learn from these kinds of days. The state of your bad day may give you a clue that you need to stay in and hibernate or let go of your growing negativity. It can give you a clue that you need to slow down and cut down on your workload.
Bad days also contribute to the people we become. Though we may feel discouraged and distressed on our bad days, a bad day can also teach us patience and perseverance.

When you think back to that bad day you have just experienced, is there something positive that came out of it? For instance, when you missed that ‘important’ meeting because your car broke down, was there an accident on the road ahead that you avoided? Or did you suddenly feel ill and were able to get the help you needed straight away, rather than waiting until the end of the meeting? Think very hard about what happened on that bad day, was there anything positive at all that happened? If so consider what would have happened if the day had gone as you originally planned.  Smile if you find the gift in your bad day. It is definitely important to remember that your attitude drives your destiny.  It is also good to remember that one negative experience does not indicate that it is the beginning of an ongoing streak of bad luck. A bad day is memorable because it is only one day among many good days. Otherwise, we would not even bother to acknowledge it as a bad day. Be aware that you are not being singled out, everybody has bad days. You are not alone, the world is not against you.

Remember, tomorrow is a brand new day.

The hare and the tortoise

Different people take life at differing speeds as the classic tale of the hare and the tortoise reminds us, and that one way is not necessarily superior to another. In fact, as we learn in the story it is the slower animal that ends up arriving at the destination first. In the same way, some of us seem to move very quickly through the obstacles and issues we all face in our lives. Others need longer periods of time to process their feelings and move into new states of awareness. For those who perceive themselves as moving quickly, it can be painful and exasperating to deal with someone else’s slower pace. Yet, just like the hare and the tortoise, we all arrive at the same destination together, eventually.

In the world today people who take their time with things are probably in the minority. We live in a time when speed and productivity are valued above almost anything else. Therefore, people who flow at a slower pace are considered to be out of sync with the world and are often pestered and prodded to go faster and do more. This can be not only frustrating but also counterproductive because the stress of being pushed to move faster than one is able to move actually slows progress. More haste, less speed comes to mind. On the other hand, if a person’s style is honoured and supported, they will find their way in their own time and, just like the tortoise, they might just beat the speedier, more easily distracted person to the finish line.

It’s important to remember that we are not actually in a race to get somewhere ahead of someone else, and it is difficult to judge by appearances whether one person has made more progress than another. Whether you count yourself among the fast movers or as one of the slower folks, we can all benefit from respecting the pace that those around us choose for themselves. This way, we can keep our eyes on our own journey, knowing that we will all end up together in the end.

Shifting your mood

It is very easy to get into a bad mood when we are faced with chores, errands, or responsibilities that we don’t want to do. And more often than not we stay in that bad mood and it will most likely makes things a lot worse. But we can try to shift that bad mood by changing our attitude, given the fact that our bad mood will not change the fact that we have to do these things.

It’s important when we’re facing something that’s really hard for us, whether it’s doing taxes, paying bills, or visiting a challenging relative, that we lovingly support ourselves through the process. The more supported we feel, the easier it is to open our minds to the idea that we could change our way of looking at the situation. In truth, most of the chores we don’t like doing are intimately intertwined with our blessings. When we remember this, we feel gratitude, which makes it hard to stay in a dark mood.

We can shift our attitude and thus brighten our mood by considering how much we love our home as we clean it and how lucky we are to have a roof over our head. Any task can be transformed from a burden to a necessary aspect of caring for something we love. All we have to do is shift our perspective, and our attitude follows shortly behind.

Experiencing nature by night

In the height of summertime’s heat, we drift outdoors at dusk to refresh ourselves in the temperate air of evening. Cricket song and the glow of fireflies come together with ever-lengthening shadows to create a natural symphony of overlapping sensations that invigorate the body and gladden the soul. As the sun sets, the vivid colours of most flowers and leaves fade, becoming a dull grey, but moon gardens provide us with a space to appreciate Mother Nature’s bounty long after the light of day has retreated. Designed to be enjoyed from dusk until the coming of the darkness, these gardens serve as a perfect complement to silvery moonlight, mild summer nights, and the spirit of rejuvenation.

Most plant life worships the sun, but a select few shrubs and flowers come into their own in luna’s glow. The silvery leaves of lamb’s ears and artemisia reflect the radiance of the moon, while the bright-white flowers adorning yucca and evening primrose seem to shimmer brilliantly in dusk’s gloom. Certain blossoms such as the moonflower and four o’clocks open only at night, releasing their sweet fragrances in spectacular displays of scent and beauty. While creating a moon garden, remember to take each human sense into account. We appreciate the ghostly beauty of nighttime nature best when we can sit comfortably until our eyes have adjusted to the surrounding darkness. Bamboo and thick grasses make a comforting sound when bandied about by gentle nighttime breezes.

Transforming a portion of your existing garden or patio into a moon garden is simple, and the pleasure you will derive from your nighttime retreat will become worth it once you start to enjoy it. Green spaces come alive at night when nocturnal blossoms release their perfume into the air and ethereally lovely and luminous foliage dances in the breeze. In a moon garden, relaxation is a simple matter of attuning yourself to the stillness of evening and seeing, for the first time, the myriad shades of beauty that can be found in the darkness.

The Power of Staying Positive

The words and ideas that we think can shape our lives and drive us toward success and happiness or failure and distress. Our thoughts are not simply ethereal pieces of information that enter our minds and then disappear.  How you think and feel can have a profound effect on your ability to recognise opportunity, how well you perform, and the outcome of the goals that you’ve set for yourself. When you maintain an optimistic outlook and make an effort to nurture only positive thoughts, you begin to create the circumstances conducive to you achieving what you desire. You feel in control and few of life’s challenges seem truly overwhelming because it is in your nature to expect a positive outcome. An optimistic mind is also an honest one. Staying positive does not mean that you ignore difficulties or disregard limitations. Instead, it means spending time focusing only on the thoughts that are conducive to your well-being and progress.

Positive thinking dramatically increases your chances of success in any endeavour. When you’re sure that you are worthy and that achievement is within your grasp, you start to relax and look for solutions rather than dwelling on problems. You are more likely to imagine positive situations or outcomes and disregard the thoughts related to giving up, failure, or roadblocks. What the mind expects, it finds. If you anticipate joy, good health, happiness, and accomplishment, then you will experience each one. Thinking positively may sound like a simple shift in attention – and it is – but it is a mind-set that must be developed. Whenever a negative thought enters your mind, try immediately replacing it with a constructive or optimistic one. With persistence, you can condition your mind to judge fleeting, self-defeating thoughts as inconsequential and dismiss them.

It is within your power to become as happy, content, or successful as you make up your mind to be. Staying positive may not have an immediate effect on your situation, but it will likely have a profound and instantaneous effect on your mood and the quality of your experiences. In order for positive thinking to change your life, it must become your predominant mind-set. Once you are committed to embracing positive thinking, you’ll start believing that everything that you want is within your grasp.

Letting go of the little stuff

Each and every day we experience numerous disappointments. Our plans are blocked by circumstance, our expectations go unmet,, our wishes go unfulfilled, and we discover that our lives are subject to a myriad of forces beyond our control. In some cases, our response is powerful because we must invest ourselves and our resources to overcome genuine hardship. In others, our reactions are far more passionate than our circumstances likely warrant. The tension that permeates our bodies and minds when we are late for an event, interrupted at work, or sitting in traffic is not inappropriate, but it can interfere with our well-being in profound ways. When we stop worrying about relatively unimportant matters, we can devote so much more of ourselves to what is truly important and be at peace.

The small frustrations and irritations wield such power over us because they rob us of the illusion of control. But every problem is a potential teacher. A confusing situation is an opportunity to practice mindfulness, and difficult people provide us with opportunities to display compassion. There is a natural human tendency to invest copious amounts of emotional energy in minor dilemmas and frustrations in order to avoid confronting those more complex issues that are largely outside the realm of our control. The intensity of our response provides us with a temporary sense of personal power that helps us cope with challenges that might otherwise overwhelm us. But it is only when we let the little stuff go that we discover that the big stuff is really not so devastating after all.

In the stress of a singularly tense incident, differentiating between an inconsequential annoyance and a legitimate challenge can seem a monumental task. Ask yourself whether the emotions you are feeling will be as vivid in a year, a day, or even an hour. As focused as you are on this moment in time, your reward for letting go of your emotional investment and stopping lamenting the loss, may be the very happiness and harmony of just being. Needless aggravation is seldom worth the cost it exacts. You cannot distance yourself from life’s inconsistencies, irritations, and upheavals, but you can relinquish your desire for perfect order and gain peace of mind in the process.

We can help the world every day

Despite our fears and limitations and the uncertainty that holds us back each of us is more than capable of helping the world. We often think it is impossible to make a difference without unlimited funding or free time, yet most healing, cleansing, and spreading of joy is accomplished in a matter of minutes. If we really want to make the world a better place one day at a time, the true significance of small good deeds reveals itself to us. We come to see that we can be of service without dedicating our lives to recognised charities or giving up the pleasures we enjoy. The warmth we feel when we help the world is only a tiny part of the affirmative transformations that take place when we make altruism a part of everyday existence.

When we think positive thoughts that echo outward, we make our homes, workplaces, communities, and countries better and brighter, give donations of time or money, smile at everyone we meet, and lend those in need of aid our assistance. As we learn, we inadvertently improve the universe because we can only be truly involved when we are informed. Even enthusiastically sharing ideas with others generates positive energy that then serves as the motivation for more tangible change. Selfless and helpful deeds remind us that we exercise some degree of control over a world that can seem chaotic at times. Even the smallest of such deeds is a demonstration of the fact that we are capable of changing the world in a positive way. Huge amounts of negative energy are generated by the suffering, pain, and close-mindedness we are regularly exposed to, but we can counteract it in a constructive way by thinking and acting altruistically when opportunities to do so arise.

Helping the world often takes no more than a moment, just a wish for the world is a beautiful gesture and can be done by even the busiest of people effortlessly. The gift you give each day need not be grand or attention-worthy because the broader benefits are the same no matter the literal repercussions. Once a day, you can affect reality, and you can reap the rewards of knowing that you are making the world a better place, day by day.

Why wait for someday?

As we know the time we are blessed with is limited and tends to fly by all too quickly. How we utilise that time is consequently one of the most important decisions we have to make. Yet it is far too easy to put off until tomorrow what we are dreaming of today. The hectic pace of modern existence affords us an easy out; we shelve our aspirations so we can cope more effectively with the challenges of the present, ostensibly to have more time and leisure to realise our purpose in the future. Or we tell ourselves that we will chase our dreams ‘someday’ once we have accomplished other lesser goals. Probably it is our fear that keeps us from seeking fulfilment in the here and now, because we view failure as a possibility, our reasons for delaying our inevitable success seem sound and rational in the now. If we ask ourselves what we are really waiting for, however, we discover that there is no truly compelling reason why we should put off the pursuit of the dreams that sustain us.

When regarded as a question, “Why wait for someday?” drains us of our power to realise our ambitions. We are so concerned with the notion that we are somehow undeserving of happiness that we cannot see that there is much we can do in the present to begin courting it. Yet when we look decisively at our existence and state, “Why wait for someday, indeed!” we are empowered to begin changing our lives this very moment. We procrastinate for many reasons, from a perceived lack of time to a legitimate lack of self-belief, but the truth of the matter is that there is no time like the present and no time but the present. Whatever we aim to accomplish, we will achieve it more quickly and with a greater degree of efficiency when we seize the day and make the most of the resources we have at our disposal presently.

All the joy, passion, and contentment you can envision can be yours right now, rather than in some far-flung point in time. You need only remind yourself that there is nothing standing between you and fulfilment. If you decide that today is the day you will take your destiny into your hands, you will soon discover that you hold the keys of fate.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch.
