Trusting your gut instinct

Gut feelings (intuition, inner wisdom, inner child, higher self) get their name from the place in the body where they make themselves known.  A pang in your gut when you may be doing the wrong thing, or a vibrant zing when your body approves of what you are doing, can guide you reliably at times when logic fails. Sometimes, when logic, or our ego, takes over, we ignore our gut, we override the built in system,  and probably live to regret it.  We discover later that a rational approach is only one way of determining what is going on in a situation and how we should react.
So where do the gut feelings come from within our physical bodies?  Our gut resides in the solar plexus just above the belly button. When it is functioning well, we can trust its guidance and adjust our actions accordingly.

Interestingly,  many of us have a tendency to ignore this area of our bodies.  We tend to take shallow breaths that never have the opportunity to reach this part of our bodies.  But it is in this place that we find the courage to act, to reach out into the world and to create change.  It is a place in our bodies that must not be ignored. When our gut is out of balance, we are timid and out of sync, wishing we had been able to say something or to stand up for ourselves.  Often we were only able to say what we wanted to say later when we were alone; telling the mirror how upset we are and wishing we had acted on the opportunity we hadn’t seen until it was gone.  Our gut had seen it, but we had ignored that feeling to our detriment. In order to get the most out of your gut feelings, make a definite effort to focus your attention on it more regularly and make the time to care for it. Notice what it is telling you, whether it is saying ‘this doesn’t feel right’ or ‘this feels good’ or ‘Don’t do it’.

You can begin right now to focus your attention on your gut by taking a deep breath right down into your belly.  Feel that part of your body just above the belly button expand with the inhaled breath.  Notice how it feels. When you exhale, pull your navel in toward your spine so as to empty out all the breath completely before taking another deep breath right down into your belly.  When you empty completely, you release any stagnant energy and create more space to be filled with another fresh, nourishing breath.  The more you practice this simple, cleansing exercise, the clearer and more communicative your gut feelings will be and the more comfortable you will feel acting on them. Try it.  When you next get a feeling in your gut about something, take notice.  What is it telling you?

It will take a little time to get used to the feelings you experience.  But you will soon learn how it works. Learn to trust your gut instinct.

Why wait for someday?

As we know the time we are blessed with is limited and tends to fly by all too quickly. How we utilise that time is consequently one of the most important decisions we have to make. Yet it is far too easy to put off until tomorrow what we are dreaming of today. The hectic pace of modern existence affords us an easy out; we shelve our aspirations so we can cope more effectively with the challenges of the present, ostensibly to have more time and leisure to realise our purpose in the future. Or we tell ourselves that we will chase our dreams ‘someday’ once we have accomplished other lesser goals. Probably it is our fear that keeps us from seeking fulfilment in the here and now, because we view failure as a possibility, our reasons for delaying our inevitable success seem sound and rational in the now. If we ask ourselves what we are really waiting for, however, we discover that there is no truly compelling reason why we should put off the pursuit of the dreams that sustain us.

When regarded as a question, “Why wait for someday?” drains us of our power to realise our ambitions. We are so concerned with the notion that we are somehow undeserving of happiness that we cannot see that there is much we can do in the present to begin courting it. Yet when we look decisively at our existence and state, “Why wait for someday, indeed!” we are empowered to begin changing our lives this very moment. We procrastinate for many reasons, from a perceived lack of time to a legitimate lack of self-belief, but the truth of the matter is that there is no time like the present and no time but the present. Whatever we aim to accomplish, we will achieve it more quickly and with a greater degree of efficiency when we seize the day and make the most of the resources we have at our disposal presently.

All the joy, passion, and contentment you can envision can be yours right now, rather than in some far-flung point in time. You need only remind yourself that there is nothing standing between you and fulfilment. If you decide that today is the day you will take your destiny into your hands, you will soon discover that you hold the keys of fate.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch.

Releasing the reins

To a large extent our perceptions of humanity are dualistic.  We tend to paint people with a broad brush, some are like us, sharing our opinions and our attitudes, while others are different. Our commitment to the values we have chosen is often so strong that we are easily convinced that our way is the right way. Sometimes we may find ourselves frustrated by those who view the world differently and make use of unusual strategies when coping with life’s challenges. However ardently we believe that these people would be happier and more satisfied following our lead, we must resist the temptation to try to change them. Every human being has been blessed with a unique nature that cannot be altered by outside forces. We are who we are at any one point in our lives for a reason, and no one person can say for certain what another should be like.

The reasons we try to change one another are numerous. Since we have learned over time to flourish in the richness of lives we have built, we may come to believe that we are qualified to speak on behalf of the greater source. The sum total of our knowledge will never compare to what we do not know, however, and our understanding of others’ lives will forever be limited. The potential we see in other people who are a part of our lives will never be exactly the same as our own, so we do these individuals a disservice when we make assumptions about their intentions, preferences, and goals. Our power lies in our ability to accept others for all their quirks and differences and to let go of the need to control every element of our existence. We can love people for who they are, embracing their uniqueness, or we can love them as human beings from afar.

Your ability to influence people may grow more sophisticated because others sense that you respect their right to be themselves, but you will likely spend more time gazing inward, into the one person you can change: yourself.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch.

Create your supportive life story

Your life is filled with relationships and events which help shape who you are and affect what you believe to be true about your life and the world in general.  Everyone has their own life story. Depending on your perspective and your willingness or not to grow, your experiences can become fodder for negativity and possible patterns for playing the victim.  Alternatively they can fuel your life with empowerment and continued self-development.  It is the story you tell yourself about what happens that makes all the difference.

Take a moment to look at the life story you are creating for yourself on an ongoing basis. If you are feeling peaceful about the past and trust in your ability to handle whatever comes your way, then you are framing circumstances in a manner that serves you well. On the other hand, if you retain a lot of guilt or resentment and often feel weighed down by life, you may want to change your perspective of the versions of past and present events. No matter who the characters are in your story or what they have done, you are the only one who can give their actions the meaning they will have for you. You are the only one who can define what role you will play in your own life. By taking responsibility for your story, you are able to learn and grow, forgive and find compassion, and most importantly, move on into a brighter future.

From now on, choose a life story that supports you. Let it be proof of your own resilience and creativity. Be kind with the roles you give yourself and generous with how many chances you get to learn what you need to know. When you remember that you are the author of your own story, you are free to create a masterpiece.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch.

Links that Last

It is a modern occurrence in our lifestyles that often isolates us from one another, it can be difficult to forge meaningful connections. Self-protection and mistrust prevent us from reaching out to neighbours and peers, and we consequently feel like we don’t truly belong anywhere. Yet creating community can be as simple as reaching out within our own neighbourhoods. We can find there are walls of suspicion and doubt which can divide us. But when we create a community we find we are willing to rise above those walls and those doubts and help us befriend the individuals who inhabit our neighbourhood or road. We are taught from childhood to fear those we do not know, but community is as much a part of survival as safety. When we take a proactive approach, we can harmoniously unite our neighbours and build a network of support that contributes to the well-being of all involved.

Your actions in the community needn’t be complicated. If you are new to your area, sending letters of introduction to your closest neighbours can ensure that their curiosity about you is partly satisfied. Consider telling them a bit about yourself and how you plan to positively contribute to your locale, even if it is something as straightforward as planting attractive flowers in your window boxes. Or if others have recently moved in nearby, schedule some time to welcome them to the area. By doing so, you can calm any misgivings they have while demonstrating that your neighbourhood is a nice place to live. It is much easier to meet people while outdoors, so try to take frequent strolls or sit outside. Say hello to people who pass by, and you will likely get to know your neighbours speedily. And one of the easiest ways to build a sense of community is to help organise local projects and events that bring people together in service or in fun!

Even if you have little in common with your neighbours, your proximity to one another can offer a wonderful opportunity to pursue new friendships and working relationships. You may not see eye to eye on everything, but each of you understands that community helps people feel connected. As you grow to know and then to like one another, the city or town where you reside will truly become your home.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch.

Offering our gifts

We all know that it is easy to get caught up in our personal lives and forget that we have an obligation to be responsible members of our communities. For some of us, expressing this responsibility is so interwoven into our personal lives that it is simply a natural extension of who we are. Others may need to take a moment to consider how to be more responsible for the communities in which we live. For those who live in large cities, they can start with their neighbourhoods. Anything done on a small level will automatically ripple out into the larger system.

Communities thrive on the talents of their members, so one approach to community responsibility is to consider what you have to offer and find ways to bring that into your community. If you have a special gift when it comes to bringing people together, you might agree to throw an event once a year that includes the whole community. Even a small open house or garden can accomplish a lot in terms of making people feel more connected and comfortable with each other. If you have a talent for gardening, you might offer to help people in your community plan their own gardens. You might be the go to person for neighbours who need someone to water their plants or care for their pets when they’re away. You might take an abandoned space in your community and encourage others to help you transform it into a community garden or a playground for children. In an area where there are many homeless people, starting a soup kitchen or organising a meal makes a big difference not only to those in need but to those who want to help.

All parades, picnics, and ceremonies started somewhere, with someone who wanted to give back to the community in which they lived. It’s not too late to propose and execute a new tradition in your own community, whether it’s a street party or an annual picnic. Your particular vision, gifts, and strengths are part of what makes your community unique, so as you recognise them in yourself, feel free to offer them to those who live in your vicinity. Whether your offerings are visionary or practical, they are the very essence of community.

Clearing Your Mind

During a day we are bombarded with words, images, stories, songs and a whole host of stimuli from any number of sources and they continue to play in our heads for hours. Especially as we lie in bed, in the quiet dark, our minds continue noisily processing all the input from our day. This can leave us feeling unsettled and harassed. It also makes it difficult to take in any new information or inspiration. Like a cluttered house that needs to be cleared if it is to have room for movement and new life, our minds need clearing if they are to be open to new information, ideas, and inspiration.

Frequently, the activities we choose to help us relax only add to the clutter. Watching television, seeing a film, reading a book, or talking to a friend all involve taking in more information. In order to really clear our minds, we need a break from mental stimulation. Activities like yoga, dancing, or taking a long walk help to draw our attention to our bodies, slowing our mental activity enough that our minds begin to settle. Deep breathing is an even simpler way to draw attention away from our mental activities. Once we are mentally relaxed, we can begin the process of clearing our minds. Most of us instinctively know what allows our minds to relax and release any unnecessary clutter. It may be meditation or time spent staring at the stars. Whatever it is, these exercises feel like a cool, cleansing bath for the brain and leave our minds feeling clear and open.

Setting aside time to clear our minds once a day creates a habit that becomes second nature over time. Our minds will begin to settle with less effort the more we practice. Ultimately, the practice of clearing our minds allows us to be increasingly more open so that we can perceive the world as the fresh offering it is, free of yesterday’s mental clutter.

Being aware of your thoughts

When you are in the company of people whose attitudes are persistently negative you generally don’t have a good time.  But we still seem to tolerate the critical and negative chatter that originates within our own minds. Often we are so used to the constant stream of self-limiting, critical consciousness that pops up in our thoughts, that we are unaware of the impact these musings have on our lives. It is only when we become aware of the power of such thoughts that we can remove many of them and fill the emptiness they leave with loving, peaceful affirmations. Many people, upon paying careful attention to their thinking patterns, are surprised at the negativity they find there. But when we take notice of our thoughts in a non-judgemental way, we initiate a healing process that will eventually allow us to replace intimidating and upsetting self-talk with positive, empowering thoughts.

Usually the occasional downbeat or judgemental thought may have little impact on your happiness, but the ongoing negativity that passes unnoticed can have a dampening effect on your mood and your outlook. When you are aware of the tone of your thoughts, however, you can challenge them. Try to become conscious of your feelings, opinions, and judgements for one day. From sunup to sundown, scrutinise the messages you are feeding into your subconscious mind. Consider your thoughts from the perspective of a detached observer and try not to judge yourself based on the thoughts that come unbidden into your mind. Simply watch the flow of your consciousness and make a note of the number of times you find yourself focusing on gloomy thoughts or indulging in self-directed criticism.

When you become increasingly aware of your patterns of thought, whether positive or negative, you will gradually learn to control the character of your stream of consciousness. Try to remember that the images and ideas that pass through your mind are transient and not a true representation of who you are. In training yourself to be cognizant of your thoughts, you gain the ability to actively modulate your mood. The awareness you cultivate within yourself will eventually enable you to create a foundation of positivity from which you can build a more authentic existence.

Recognising your value

We often think that we are insignificant, although this is an illusion. Seeing celebrities, successful people in our community, or large corporations and comparing ourselves to them. We may then think that their fame or material power affirm how little our own lives amount to. But nothing could be further from the truth. Each and every single one of us matters tremendously.  Our very existence affects countless people in numerous ways. And because we are each essentially a microcosm of the larger universe, our internal experiences affect the whole of life more than we could ever imagine. The world simply could not exist as it does now if you, or any one of us, were not in it.

Maybe you believe that on some level you are sure your life does not matter. If this thought resonates within you, maybe it is time to explore why you feel this way. You may have formed self-rejecting or belittling beliefs as a child to keep yourself safe or to help you make sense of confusing situations. You may have felt unseen or unheard and decided that there was something wrong with you, rather than with the attention span of the people around you. Spend some time looking into where these feelings of insignificance first took root, and see what changes you might be able to make in your life and in your heart.

Your belief in your own unimportance could be limiting you and impacting your life in enormous ways. When you shift your perceptions around your own ability to affect your life and impact the world, you may discover wonderful parts of yourself that you had long ago forgotten. There may even be exciting new parts that you never even knew existed. When you gain awareness of how much your life really does matter, new sources of energy can emerge and your sense of connection with the world is renewed.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch. I want to work with you so you have more freedom, more fun, less stress.

Baby steps to big change

It is usually best to ease into a big change by starting small.  By making small changes with baby steps we allow ourselves to grow into a new habit and make it a permanent part of our lives. Making a sudden change may set us up to fail and that will make it difficult to go on, and we will be more likely to revert to our old ways. But don’t despair, even if we have made a sudden change and find ourselves contemplating the choice to start over again, we can decide to take it slowly this time, and move forward.

The goals we set for ourselves are indicators of the need for change and are very useful in getting us moving in the right direction. However, it is possible that once we try out what we thought was ideal, we may find that it doesn’t actually suit us, or make us feel the way we had hoped.  By taking baby steps we have the chance to look around and consider other options as we learn and grow.  We have time to examine the underlying values of the desire for change and find ways to manifest those feelings, whether it looks exactly like our initial goal or not. Taking baby steps forward gives us time to adjust and find secure footing on our new path.

Often life doesn’t give us the opportunity to anticipate or prepare for a big change, and we may find ourselves overwhelmed by what is in front of us. By choosing one thing to work on at a time, we focus our attention on something manageable, and eventually we will look up to see that we have accomplished quite a bit. Forcing change is, in essence, a sign that we do not trust the universe’s wisdom. Instead, we can listen to our inner guidance and make changes at a pace that is right for us, ensuring that we do so in alignment with the rhythm of the universe.

If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch. I want to work with you so you have more freedom, more fun, less stress.
