Don’t make resolutions at New Year

I think we have all done it. Made one or more New Year resolutions and then broken them within a few weeks. I believe the main reason for this is that we make the resolution at the wrong time and for the wrong reasons.

It is far more likely that if we make a promise to ourselves, when we are ready to do so, the promise will be kept.

For instance, it may be thaf you want to give up something – drinking, smoking, eating sweets, biting your nails – but you are not ready to do it on the 1st January. Making that resolution for the New Year puts a lot of pressure on you to succeed. But, you are not ready for this and you are making this promise to yourself because it is the New Year and it is expected to succeed. Although you really don’t want to do this, but have convinced yourself that you do.

Unfortunately, most New Year resolutions are broken within the first few weeks because there really is no effort put in and because we are not ready.

Now, if you decide in, say, June that you want to give up something, because you want to and because you are ready, you will be far more likely to succeed. There is much less pressure on you to succeed and you may well find it a lot easier to do.

Take care of yourself. Don’t put pressure on yourself. Make a positive change when you are ready and not because it is expected of you by yourself or others.

Stop dragging the weight of the past

When we hold onto regret it is like dragging the weight of the past with us.  We find that It drains our energy, leaving less available for life in the present because we are constantly feeding an old issue. This attachment can cause illness in the same way watering a dead plant creates decay. We know that something new and beautiful can grow in its place if we prepare the soil and plant the right seeds. We also know that we create our lives from our thoughts, so dwelling on the past may actually recreate a situation in our lives where we are forced to make that choice again and again. We can choose to move on right now by applying what we have learned to the present and perhaps even sharing with others, transforming the energy into something that is constructive and creative for ourselves and others.

We find that forgiveness is the soothing balm that can heal regret. When we sit quietly, we can imagine discussing the issue with the self of our past and offering our forgiveness for that choice. We can ask ourselves for forgiveness for being locked in that space of judgment for so long. We also may want to ask forgiveness from anyone else who may have been affected. By replaying the event in our minds, we can choose a new ending using all that we now know. Imagine that you have actually gone back into the past and made this change, and then say goodbye to it. Release your former self with a hug and bring forgiveness and love back with you to the present. Since we are usually our harshest critics, it is amazing how powerfully healing it can be to offer ourselves love.

Keeping our minds and our energy fully in the present allows us to fuel our physical and emotional healing and well-being today. This action frees our energy to create the dreams we dream for the future. By taking responsibility and action in the present, we can release our hold on the past.

Dispelling drama

There are hundreds of people in the world who seem to attract calamity. They live their lives jumping from one difficult situation to the next, often surrounded by unstable people. Some people believe themselves to be victims of fate and disparage a universe they regard as malevolent. Others view their chaotic circumstances as just punishments for some failing perceived or real. Yet, in truth, neither group has been fated or consigned to suffer. They are likely unconsciously drawing drama into their lives, attracting catastrophe through their choices, attitudes, and patterns of thought. Drama, however disastrous, can be exciting and stimulating. But the thrill of pandemonium eventually begins to frustrate the soul and drain the energy of all who embrace it. To halt this process, we must understand the root of our drama addiction, be aware of our reactions, and be willing to accept that a serene, joyful life need not be a boring one.

Many people, who are used to living in the dramatic world they create, feel uncomfortable when confronted with the prospect of a lifetime of peace and contentment. The drama in their lives serves multiple purposes. Upset causes excitement, prompting the body to manufacture adrenaline, which produces a pleasurable surge of energy. For those seeking affection in the form of sympathy, drama forms the basis of their identity as a victim. And when drama is familial, many people believe they can avoid abandonment by continuing to play a key role in the established family dynamic. The addiction to drama is fed by the intensity of the feelings evoked during bouts of conflict, periods of uncertainty, and upheaval.

Understanding where the subconscious need for drama stems from is the key to addressing it effectively. Journaling can help transfer this need from the mind onto a benign piece of paper. After repeated writing sessions, your feelings regarding the mayhem, hurt feelings, and confusion often associated with drama become clear. When you confront your emotional response to drama and the purpose it serves in your life, you can reject it. Each time you consciously choose not to take part in dramatic situations or associate with dramatic people, you create space in your inner being that is filled with a calm and tranquil stillness and becomes an asset in your quest to lead a more centred life.
