Are all ‘conferences’ the same?

I remember going to my very first ‘conference’.  It was marketed as a Coach’s super conference where I would learn from a plethera of ‘world famous’ coaches and come away with lots of useful information.  I would learn a whole host of stuff. The cost was minimal for the actual conference, something in the region of £70 for a weekend, as the organiser was doing it to be philanthropic.  It was being held near an international airport in an hotel.  I decided I would go and booked my hotel room, and set off to learn something new.

I was sorely disappointed.  The very first presenter was Paul McKenna.  He spoke for two hours, gave everyone a free copy of his latest book.  He was extremely interesting and didn’t sell a thing.

After this the ‘conference’ went downhill rapidly.  Every speaker that followed on that first day was selling their product.  Whether it was a coaching course, a weekend of inspiration culminating in a fire walk, how to be a tv star etc.  Not only that, there was the pressing of the urgency buttons because the audience were invited to run to the back of the room to sign up now as there were only 9, 8, 7, 6 places left and so on.

And these products were priced in the hundreds or thousands of pounds.  Plus, if you signed up today, you could get the whole ‘conference’ on video to keep forever for only £xxxx.

I did meet some lovely people in the audience, some of whom were as disappointed as I was.

I stayed the night in the hotel, which was lovely by the way.  After breakfast the ‘conference’ continued.  By the first coffee break in the morning I had had enough.  I couldn’t take any more blatant selling.  So I left.  I went home. I vowed never to go to one of these ‘conferences’ ever again.  I did learn something at that ‘conference’, not to go to another one and not to do the same thing myself.

Of course, there are many ways these selling shows are created. They are billed as one day workshops, or weekend retreats. The main aim of these is to upsell, even though you do learn something about yourself whilst you are there.

And, of course, once you have bought into the upsell, and you have moved on to whatever course, product it is, there is always another, more expensive course or product to buy.

So, are all ‘conferences’ the same.  No, there are genuine conferences where you learn stuff that is useful to you and where you are not asked to buy something else much more expensive. But do beware, as I learned the hard way, that not all conferences are what they are advertised to be.  And, if it looks too good to be true, that is probably right, it is too good to be true.

If this resonates with you, and you have had a similar experience,  get in touch with me today and tell me about it. I will be really interested to hear about your experiences.

The SELF workshop – the aftermath

The SELF workshop went very well. There were around 26 people in the room and all seemed to learn something, whether that was about themselves, their situation or their future plans.

I had some wonderful feedback too and will share this with you. I asked people to write on a post it note at the end of the workshop what they felt about it, and to stick it on the door as they left.  All comments were positive which is very gratifying for me as I had put a lot of work into this workshop.

The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly.  I got to chat with every single one who came along, and after a little while they really began to get into it and were coming up with answers and experiences.

feedback

As we worked through the workbook, there were a few people who started to realise that they hadn’t been thinking about what they needed in life, they had been too busy pleasing other people. We talked a lot about energy, emotional energy spent on worrying, stressing etc.  And we found ways that we could reduce this.

We also talked about life and how although we exist, we shouldn’t just exist we should live our lives with vigour.

feedback1

We talked about freedom and giving ourselves permission to  live our lives as we want for ourselves.  There was a general feeling that often we didn’t allow ourselves to be who we are because we can hide behind a persona in some way or another, whether that be the role we have at work or how we think we are perceived.

And then we created vision boards of how we want our lives to look and what goals we want to achieve.  They were excellent with some people knowing exactly what they want, and some not quite so sure.

feedback2

All in all a good time was had by everyone, including myself.  Some of the attendees shared their vision boards and explained what it meant to them, others wanted to keep theirs private.

I am looking forward to the next one now with even more excitement.

S.E.L.F. – F – Freedom

What does freedom mean to you?

The dictionary definition is: ‘The power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants’. It also says ‘The right to follow one’s own beliefs in matters of religion and morality’.

We all deserve the freedom to be who we are, which includes acting, speaking and thinking as we want, without fear of criticism, chastisement, ridicule, admonishment and anything else people can throw at us. We are all free to believe in whichever god we choose, or not to believe. We are all free to implement our own moral standards without judgement by others or of others.

We are all free to determine what we will wear, whether we will wear make up or not, how we like our hair to be done etc. Without that freedom we can very easily become slaves to the views of other people and lose sight of our own identity. Come along to my workshop and find out more about how you can achieve your freedom.

freedom

Remember, you don’t need anyone else’s permission to be you.  Be proud of who you are, stand tall and don’t hide in the background – that is not where you are meant to be.

In September I am presenting a FREE workshop and freedom is one of the topics included.  Click here to book your ticket today and learn more about the secret of SELF.

S.E.L.F – L – Life

What does life mean to you?

The dictionary definition is “The existence of an individual human being or animal”.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to just exist, I want to live my life with vigour and energy, to enjoy being in existence and to live my life to the full.

laughing

How can we all do that?  We can do that by choosing our thoughts, as they affect how we feel and in fact affect our whole body. How, you may well ask?

Well, the smallest unit of life is called an organism.  Organisms are composed of cells.  And our bodies are made up of millions of cells, each and every one of them attuned to what we are thinking, feeling, saying, hearing etc.

In fact, when we are thinking that we are feeling weak, all our cells in our bodies respond by being weak.  However, when we are thinking that we are feeling strong, all our cells in our bodies respond by being strong. Likewise, when we are feeling tired, full of energy, miserable, happy or any other feelings you can imagine, our cells are responding in the same way.

So the state of our lives is dependent upon making sure that every one of our cells in our bodies is working to our benefit and that is where feeling positive, confident and happy with our lives makes such a difference to our whole being, from the inside out. Be aware of what you are thinking and feeling, it makes a huge difference.

S.E.L.F. – E – Energy

What comes to mind when you think of energy? Getting fit, running a marathon or something just as energetic? Well, that is one meaning, but I am referring to the energy we expend in our daily lives doing what we normally do.

The dictionary definition is:

  • the strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity.

In our daily lives we spend a lot of emotional energy worrying, decision making, hiding behind a persona we have created that we think other people want to see, and a million other activities that in themselves aren’t energetic, but use up a lot of emotional energy. So much so that we feel tired, get irritable and, at the end of the day, wonder what on earth we have been doing to feel this way.

womanscreaming

But do we need to waste our emotional energy on some of these activities? No we don’t.  Some of these activities are, quite frankly, futile and others are a bad choice. But there is something you can do to save your energy so that you don’t end up frazzled, tired and irritable.  Come to my workshop and learn what you can do for yourself to ease this situation.

In September I am presenting a FREE workshop and energy is one of the topics included.  Click here to book your ticket today and learn more about the secret of SELF.

S.E.L.F. – S – Strength

What does strength mean in the context of my coaching?  The Oxford Dictionary’s definition is ‘The influence or power possessed by a person’.  I agree with that definition, although I expand it a little thus:

  •  ‘The influence or power possessed by a person within, that they can use to overcome fears, changes, life traumas etc.’

Strength can manifest itself in many different ways.  For instance you could have great willpower and use it to break a habit, or have the strength to uphold your values despite peer pressure to do otherwise.  It is sometimes quite difficult to promote your own values when they are different from what maybe considered the norm.  That doesn’t mean that you or ‘they’ are wrong.  But sticking to your guns takes a lot of strength and resolve.

Having strength from within to confront your fears, deal with pain or danger, work through uncertainty and carry on despite intimidation can be difficult, but it is amazing the amount of inner strength we have, if we only care to look.

One very famous lady seemed to have a bottomless pit of strength upon which she would draw even in the face of criticism, ridicule and disbelief.  She was, of course, Mother Teresa who devoted her life to helping people in India.  She was widely admired by also widely criticised particularly for her campaigns against contraception and for substandard conditions in the hospices for which she was responsible.

 motherteresa

Now, I am not suggesting that you or I are on a par with Mother Teresa, but we do have the same strengths within us and it is up to us to use those strengths for our own benefit and for the benefit of others.

In September I am presenting a FREE workshop and strength is one of the topics included.  Click here to book your ticket today and learn more about the secret of SELF.
